Never seen or heard of one landing. Cant think of a single reason for them to land in Ashe county.

Dog, how many time have you seen them land at the airport? I have seen them flying over for years, but not landing.

The military has been flying over the northern end of the county for years. Its nothing new. I can stop them from landing.

Does anyone on this site have knowledge of why these Military planes and helicopters are doing maneuvers here at the airport? Does it have something to do with the 1.9 million federal grant to extend the runway? Sounds like big brother to me.

C130 requires min of 3,586 for runway at max loading of as short as 1,400 feet at 80,000# gross weight. Is capable of operating in and out of KGEV which has 5,000 feet of runway. This is not to say the pavement is capable of withstanding a fully loaded C 130 at max gross of 155,000#

Dog, read his post again. I believe his data is correct. And he never states he's seen an osprey or a C130 take off from the Ashe airport.
Personally, I've never traveled by Ospry, but have rode a C130. Those web seats suck

The C-130 Hercules are designed to be able to land and take off on short runways, around 3,000ft. so it is possible, as the county airport is just under 5,000ft. The Osprey can do either conventional landing or vertical landing. I know what I have seen.

Because it's in the mountains, that runway is east-west instead of the usually NE/SE configuration. When taking off west (which I assume a large plan would do to take off into the prevailing wind) you fly over Family Central and Mountainview School. If I were a county official, I would not want that because even if you are operating at night, there could be a lot of people at both places.

Can you put a loaded C130 down at Jefferson and then take off again inside normal safety margins? I know you don't need 10K feet but I didn't think Jefferson even had 5200'.

Has anyone noticed the Ospreys, C-130s and helicopters landing and taking of at the airport for the last few months? Usually it is in the evening and after dark. There is also a couple of new buildings at the airport.

It should be criminal the tax payers money we have paid each year on that landing strip for the rich to play on.

I am hearing & seeing lots of small planes flying around this area all morning, so what is happening at "our expensive" airport that we need to be aware of?
We hardly ever have air traffic unless the hospital sends a patient off the mountain.
