Zoning laws do not allow residents to have meaningful input. They are made by bureaucrats who are often unelected and have little chance of being dismissed. I mean in this county the county has twice rejected Judy Porter Poe and yet she still as an unelected bureaucrat sits on the DSS board and several other boards. It's like a stray dog that keeps coming around even though you don't feed it.

I lived in Utah in the late 90s and the zoning laws had gotten so ridiculous that you couldn't even replace an outdoor utility building, even one near collapse without going through a number of bureaucratic hurtles that most people couldn't afford. As Thomas Jefferson once stated the natural state of government is to grow. Sure you might be lured into a zoning that seems reasonable at the time, but every year thereafter bureaucrats will add more rules.

If you buy land then you should be able to use that land for any reasonable way. That's really what this country was founded on, the right of self governance.

Our tax burden is indeed low. But if we continue to own landing strips, parks, old schools, and building new buildings just because we can it wont be low long.

No where in this state has there been a four lane highway built that the corridor didn't grow. Values along it will sky rocket. Mark it down that dog said so.

Then buy property in a restricted community or move to an urban or suburban area with zoning. You have that right

I appreciate your dislike and distrust of our elected officials, land use planning, zoning , ETJ what ever you want to call it could offer protections for land owners too. I'd just as soon know what I could expect to be living next to down the line as not. Sure land use plans could change, as the opportunities and needs of the area change, if crafted properly I'd have a say in any change proposed.

I'm not excited about Ashe changing much, I do realize it will have to change some if I hope to continue to live and own residential property here. While the tax burden in Ashe is low compared to the rest of the state, so is the household income. A systematic means to attract some sort of non-residential development could offer some relief on the residential tax payer. Without some type of development plan how would potential businesses know where to look for a site to locate and be attracted to even consider locating here?

Sure planned development is only one leg of a stool for any development, education and transportation also play a role. Those other items need just as much work if the overall outlook for the area will have an opportunity for improvement.

Does anything have to change, no not really, I don't guess anything ever has to change but if it does would you like to have a meaningful voice in the direction of that change?

County wide zoning is just as dumb as giving the airport another 270,000 dollars.

If only the op knew how to post a link or more info so everyone would know what they are talking about.

Like I have asked a few times there is someone with money behind all this money laundering at the landing strip. I had rather see them dig a hole at the dump and put the 270 grand in it. Remember they have always under estimated every dime that has been poured in that landing strip.

$270k? Do we have any more government buildings that need decorations?

County wide zoning is a BAD idea. After everything that's happened just over the past few years, why would you want to give the local government more power?

Oh wow looks like we have another new expansion on tap at the Ashe County InterCounty Airport. I would say international, but that's a laugh. $270,000 what else could that fund? It also looks like the County will need to save its pennies to play in court for ignoring state laws concerning land use. Continues to point out the need for a comprehensive land use plan (zoning) in the county.
