Fins, ItsComing was the name of the person, though I did point out you could potentially land a V-22 at the airport. I also incorrectly said a C-17 could land, you'd have to more than triple the current max load to land one empty :). I also pointed out in that thread I didn't think martial law was coming, we hear rumblings of that after the end of any 8 year presidency with perhaps the exception of Reagan in the last 30 years because his health was already declining.

No a C-130 could not land at the airport not even if it was empty. They'd have to double the load max on the airport to land a C-130 that's about half loaded. Though they wouldn't have to increase the runway length.

An Osprey could land but it would have to be about half loaded instead of fully loaded, which could be used I suppose in a pinch, but they'd be much more likely to just have Airborne Troopers drop out of the C-130 or V-22 and use the Airport as their drop zone.

I don't remember who it was, but someone posted in a different thread on the airport that the New World Order troops were coming and the airport was being extended to support them.

I wonder if the new asphalt could support a loaded C130. The length should be enough, but not sure it could hold the weight.

No fighter jets, just C-130s and Ospreys for troops and supplies.

4 million is nothing in the Federal budget, heck for all his years of decrying Earmarks while in Congress, Ron Paul's district was the biggest beneficiary of them......

As for conspiracy theories, keep in mind the runway is to short for jets like the F-16, F-22 and F35A. You could in theory land a F-35B there or a V-22 however they'd have to be loaded significantly less than their maximum takeoff weights in order to land and take off without damaging the runways.

Because someone knew how to submit the right paperwork to the right federal department. Nothing more. It's not some illuminati conspiracy

Fins, if I see yours and dogs imaginary friend "Timmy", i'll ask him.

Why has the Federal Gov. dumped almost 4 million into a little airport in NW NC? That is the big question.

Timmy, how many planes have you counted so far?

FINS, that's the problem here, the majority of the population does not have a college degree. If we'd spent the money on helping workers get a associates degree from Wilkes Community College instead of the airport then the county would be far better positioned to woo industries.

It's not that the local work force is lazy. In many cases most of them got trapped in just living their lives, They didn't have the money or opportunity to go to college, or if they did they never found the means to finish. Investment in higher education is important but a third of the county lives in poverty to the point that such is outside their means to accomplish.

And do you think that' s going to change now?

Add this in Jr, they dont fly those ambulances either. The well to do plane owners with second homes has led two boards by the nose and gotten each and every request fulfilled at their landing strip. Its a shame the boards bought every bill of goods brought before them concerning that landing strip.

I sure hope you soon find this "Timmy" that you speak of. It is apparent that he is embedded in yours and dogs every thought..

Junior, I don't remember the town, but there is a town out west, I believe it's a couple hours from Denver, that in some ways is similar to this area. They were dying, but found that the executives of high tech companies wanted to get out of metropolitan areas. They went out and courted start ups and high tech firms. For the most part, they created a new Silicon Valley. The companies didn't need trains or interstates because their products could be Fed Exed or some even emailed. But what was required was for the town to embrace education and outsiders.

I agree with dog and Fins on the airport, biggest waste of taxpayer dollars ever.

I don't see the Furniture or Textile plants coming back. I also don't see this as a reasonable location for someone to build a new plant. I've lived here most my life, but if I was a CEO, this isn't a place I'd consider for a plant, I'm sorry but that's just it. Maybe as a corporate retreat or vacation home but not where I'd want to put my new manufacturing plant. No the four lane will not change that anymore than the airport will.

The reason this county had Furniture and Textile plants was that the savings in low wages and benefits compared to other markets out weighted the increased cost of transporting material here and finished goods out. Unfortunately due to the government on many levels that's no longer true.....and it won't be in the foreseeable future.

If someone was to build a new plant here it would have to be a low labor plant, heavy in modern automation (robotics or 3D Printing) wherein the savings cost of labor here would then more than outstrip the increased cost of transportation. Such a plant would not employ many current residents of the county, not because they couldn't be trained to do it, but because the company would require what most residents don't have, a college degree.
