County manager's contract extended

I believe any politician for any office should be required to live and work among the people they represent, otherwise how can they ever truly be accountable?

They are required to do so in order to run for office.

Do you feel it is important for the county commissioners to live in the county?

While I agree some think its not important for the manager to live in the county I think they should live in the county. Most all counties require it. By not living in the county the manager gives the impression he is expecting to stay only a short while. Given his micro managing and his part in forcing Donna Weaver to leave he can go anytime he likes. I would be willing to pay his bounty. It would be chicken feed to what is wasted at the landing strip.

Out of curiosity, do you think the new commissioners should terminate the county manager? Why or why not?

let me add that about a year ago we both left the site for 4 months or more. It all but dried up.

Why do you blame us for your short comings with your life?

aFicioNados- I just love trying to have a civil conversation with people who just cannot be civil. Notice the difference between my tone and yours. No reason for nastiness but hey that is your personality. Cannot debate an issue just sticking to the facts. IN FACT I am very confident I know more about elected officials than you and of course certainly realize the difference between them and employees. It is a use of my short life on planet earth to continue a dialog with someone like you- that is why so few people actually use this site which is a shame cause we could all learn from it. Site has gone down hill for years cause of the nasty comments and or the ridiculous ones like underdog 2 posts. People ask for help or inquire about something and he always has some smart answer. Signing off again this time not to come back.

While I support lynn's opinion of Roark I must disagree with him on several fronts. First he could have just stated the obvious he did not agree with hb2 and let that be it instead of going off on a tangent. Most of us have heard it enough. Do something about it rather than talk. Second 1000 feet is enough for a person on the sex registry to stay away from a school and a bar away from a church. So it should have been just fine with a industry. This needs fixing by the new board. Third the extension of the ambulance contract was a good one with the exception of they should have put wording in if the call volume reaches a level a fourth unit is needed the contract would need to be revisited. As it stands no such protection exists. Fourth not all of the candidates are worth putting in those mouth breather seats so look back at the advice thread.

Mr. Lynn sums it up perfectly.

Is the USPS still a government job? Or did they get spun off into some other category?

underdog2

What does a mail carrier living in Virginia have to do with an Ashe county job? Mail carriers are employed by the usps.not the county. You have mouth breathers sitting there that think its ok for Virginia residents to dump their trash at our dump sites.

First, you've never actually stated a real reason you've only given half reasons. And two, the fact that you don't understand the difference between an elected offcial and a hired employee shows you are already in a subject above your head. And the county manager isn't responsible for the tax base, that falls that the feet of the commissioners.

Now that I've given you a chance to swim, and you chose to sink like a rock, let me expose the problem in your thinking. Instead of putting the burden on employees to live in the county, the burden should be on the county government to hire locals as employees. Your thinking is backwards. It's oppressive and puts the people reporting to the king. Putting He burden on the county to give priority to residents, and more priority to natives, makes the government work for the people. And it makes the county invest in the future instead of the people being saddled with looking after the county.

AFicloNadoS guess you have a problem in reading..cause I said what the obvious reason was in my last comments. Please re read. Further as in Ashe County the USPO has several mail carriers that live in Virginia but deliver mail in Ashe. In all walks of life here in the high country jobs are always an issue- would seem to me that we need to support living in the county for all. I am positive as an intelligent person you realize that if you live or reside in an area you are:

1. buying or paying rent-which helps the economy
2. Stats show that people who reside outside an area spend their disposable income in the areas where they live.
3. TAX base- so in all areas they are not paying taxes or very little but take from the pot where the rest of us are- sales tax, property tax and on and on. And this area needs every penny they can get for operation.

And of course last I will say that it is a real shocker to me that any county manager---who is responsible for the county's tax base-and all that goes along with it would not live in the county that he is governing. And if you believe so strongly that it is ok--- then hey I say why would not the voters vote for a county commissioner who resides outside the county......and we all know that will never ever happen. Have a great weekend.

I still want to know what the obvious reasons are.

At least 25 years ago most counties stopped requiring employees to live in the county. Even the johnny trooper patrol started letting johnny boys live outside the county they were assigned. Within reason of course. Employees started going to court and when the cases reached 60/40 in the employees favor governments stopped the requirement. Now there are cases where governments do require persons in upper management to reside in the county and give them usually a year to move.

I know of a recent case of the wildlife crowd removing an officer from a county because he lived 5 miles outside the county he was assigned to. Now I understand why the officer needs to be able to respond but seeing how they let the johnny troopers do it they should have some leniency with the wildlife boys.

And just what are the obvious reasons for employees to live in the county? So far neither you nor anyone else has given any valid reasons to require employees to live in the county

Call me old fashioned just cause the county commissioners do not make the rules for such things does notmake it right. I know a good friend of his, Sam DOES not reside in Ashe County. I remember clearly when Mr. Big shot democrat from Alleghany took the job. Said it then and now today- anyone holding any county office must reside in the county. Including police- etc. This years ago was a must for the obvious reasons- as said above when anyone lives outside the area they have nothing invested in seeing to it that the area they hold a job in- succeeds.

Once some counties and cities said hey to expensive to live in each- so they made exceptions- NOT so in Ashe.

Does the manager live in his mothers basement?

aFicIoNadoS

Posted 8:31 am, 10/07/2016

I fail to see how that is different from most other county and city managers. This ain't 1965 where local people take jobs and stay in the same place till they die. Now people get masters degrees and doctorates in government management, then use small counties like Ashe to build their resume to move to larger pastures. They are not emotionally invested in the area they live in. And since 2008 buying property is not seen as the great investment it once was. Renting is more popular than ever before.

The idea of people having pride in where they come from/live is unfortunately gone
