Things have changed a lot in the past several years. Now most clerks of court provide forms or you to file pro se, that is, without a lawyer. Even with a lawyer, you still have to go through mediation with the other side and the lawyer can't be present (not positive but I think that's right). So you will probably have the same outcome without a lawyer. I know its scary to feel alone but believe me, the judges and other side will take care to make sure your rights are protected so you can't appeal. Having said that, if you still want a lawyer, do NOT go to Boone for a divorce/custody lawyer - the reason being is that Watauga is in a different district, have different judges, different local rules and if its an Ashe case an attorney from another district is at a distinct disadvantage. If you want to go out of the county, go to Wilkes, Alleghany or Yadkin. Those are the counties in our district and know how to deal with the system in Ashe, especially the judges. The best thing both you you could do is keep it out of court and paying lawyers. Look up equitable distribution between husband and wife and make each column equal because thats what you are going to pay the lawyers to do and you can do it for free. Give the kids to the wife with visitation cause thats what the judge will do unless she is in prison. Now if you like to squander money go ahead and hire a lawyer. Get over it you screwed up and she found a new screwdriver. Go find you some strange.
