Moving houses on 221

221 should have been completed years ago. The only chance for economic development in Ashe is to improve the infrastructure.

Kinda true, The old bridge on 221 in the Lemly River Bottom has been condemned for over weight loads.

If you are permitted to move a large dozer or track hoe to Boone from West Jefferson ( over 100,000 pds) you will have to go highway 16 to Wilkes and back up 421.

My understanding is that the current roads are not legal for trucks to travel. The DOT has overlooked enforcing the law because there are not alternative routes into and out of the county. The road needs to be widened

Partially true. It is not approved for 102" wide or twin trailers. They are permitted on 421 and a five mile perimeter to pickup and deliver. It is very common for trailers to be 102" wide now and twins are used when freight is bulky but not heavy.

Wait and see, the highway to nowhere will only waste a boatload of tax money and harm the Mt Jefferson road area. And Jefferson, too. Not to mention the construction mess for years. I'm surprised citizens are not up in arms over this boondoggle.

Runkle evidently is a transplant - "the quaintness" of the area is long gone if you dig beneath the surface and take a hard look at the numbers on some type of public assistance, the unemployment rate and the number of individuals busted on drug related charges - not to mention the throes that haven't been arrested yet. Widening 221 is the only hope of increasing economic development that this county has. God know the 3 commissioners that we currently have running the show don't have a clue about enticing industry to the county, nor does the manager or his lackey the economic development director who has no idea what she's doing.

Sorry, but the 16 mountain is not the preferred "gateway" to Ashe County. US 221 will be a good road and is needed.

Highway to nowhere.. a total waste of tax money. 16 mountain needs the work much more. Plus it's going to ruin the quaintness of the area... which is about all we've got going for us right now.

I have spoken with the right of way agents concerning my own house and he said that I can buy back the house for 1/10th of what ever they give me for the house/property.

The Ashe county tax office web page also shows the property that has been bought by the State. Also from what I have been told only the original home owner can buy back the home.

Is there any way to find out which houses the state owns and has offered for sale?

I got a quote from three different house movers to move a house in MIllers Creek. 1,900 sq. ft. story and a half house seven years old. Move it .9 mile. Got a quote on digging the basement, foundation, well, septic, etc. Talked to inspections at to what I else I would have to do. Totaled the quotes and they came in almost 90% of the tax value of the house. It was not worth moving

I once heard a story about a man who complimented a house moving company that he had hired. Their work was professional, fast, efficient, and did minimal damage to the house in question. The owner of the house moving company said that he had moved hundreds of house all over the country. He also said that it should be remembered that the geek in the circus side show that bites the heads off chickens has also been through a lot of chickens to get it just right.

The two houses being moved were bought for $500 each. The owner had the first opportunity to buy them at that price.

If the house is in good structural condition to begin with, it is very much worth it to move it compared to the cost of rebuilding it. Also, they aren't auctioning these to the highest bidder. They told my aunt that only she could buy it back and that she had to tell them before they made their offer to her if she intended to buy it back. They told her generally they would sell it back a 1/10th of the buyout price. That makes a $150k house only $15k, then pay $15k - $20k to move it, add in $10k - $15k for a new foundation, another $10k for well & septic and you basically have a house for $55k - $60k give or take a few thousand depending on any grading work, etc. But keep in mind, the grading work, well & septic, & foundation were all going to be required for a new house too. You might have a few minor repairs to fix up but you would basically be saving $90k over what you were paid for they buyout. I'll take that deal any day of the week.

That's about right on the price. Most of what you are paying for is the experience and know how. Like paying a doctor five thousand for a surgery.

The most of the work is jacking it up and down - not the actual move.

Coop, I must have gotten hosed by my mover. $18k to move less than 100 yards on level ground. I just remembered the name, Bowers, Hurley, and Saunders did my moving

Farmer - house movers are always busy. A lot of people must not share your opinion.

Not to mention the cost of any structural damage that might be incurred during the move. Totally not worth it in my opinion.
