Yeah they do some crappy work, no doubt. What is keeping them on the state bid list i'm unsure of. Guess we will just have to sit back and see what comes about in the days ahead...

Joseph T. | Posted 12:29 pm, 02/25/2015 | I doubt it Wiley has been on a mission to become the regional leader in paving as such MayMead has paved most every major road job In this area. These jobs include 421 from south of Deep Gap to Boone, 321 from Black berry to Blowing Rock, 321 from Black Berry to the bottom of 321 mountain. They have milled and repaved 321 from blowing rock in to Boone and 105. They milled and repaved a good bit of the Blue Ridge Parkway from Hwy16 to the Virginia line and have the contract for the I-77/I-40 interchange. They own or lease the plant on Hwy 16 in Ashe and bought out a major competitor down State. These are just a few jobs that I can think of If I was a betting man I would put my money on May Mead |
With the quality of work Wiley and company does, it amazes me that the state still has them on the approved list. I am not sure some of their distributor operators know what a screed is. I have watched them skimp on tack coat, just a few dribbles out of the nozzles, not pack the new plant mix as much as it should be, etc. Nothing to them to have to come back a few weeks later and redo their work.

I wouldn't bet money on the asphalt being subbed to Maymead. Carl Rose and Son would be a strong contender in that category.. IMO

Hard to say but here are my predictions. Paving for sure that will go to MayMead I have heard that Johnny Hampton was biding on part of the road and since he has a tub grinder He may get the clearing. I don't think they have the amount of equipment needed to do the major earth work so that may be subbed out as well. That leaves Erosion control (ie) silt fence they may keep this but I wouldn't be surprise to see it subbed out Seeding since they have a hydro seeder they will keep that Drainage pipe and box culverts I think they will keep that as well Road base stone could also go to MayMead Fencing and guard rail will be subbed out Signage both permanent and temporary will be subbed out Striping is subbed out

Has it officially been awarded to Vannoys? Since they are under the Engineers Estimate the State could decline their bid and give it to Young and MeQueen

Because these company's that come here to do these jobs usually hire quite a few people at a pay rate between 10 and 18 bucks an hour.

Vannoy sold the paving business because most of it was government work and very low margin. I'd say they will bid on the excavation work, grading and the like because they have the labor pool and equipment to do the job. They have a local advantage because they do not have to spend quite as much money to mobilize to work in their home county.
