New lanes are necessary mainly due to the idiots who drive 35 - 40 mph from 421 to west jeff.

The new road will definitely be a major selling point for any other type of manufacturing operations to move into Ashe. If the road isn't built now, you'll be asking "why didn't we build that road" in another ten years when all the jobs go elsewhere. And it all doesn't have to be manufacturing jobs. There are other jobs that the trailer park crowd can do as well, such as working in a distribution center. Good, four lane roads would be very important in that respect. And don't forget, with two lanes going one way into Ashe, that'll allow outsiders to get into your community to change things in half the time!

I'm sure the jobs will nowhere match the number of unemployed....

Against my better judgement...
If you are against the project, then what is your solution to bring jobs to Ashe?

So you want more money and more jobs to leave. Maybe eventually everyone can live like you and you won't have to feel bad about not having as much as other people

I'm amazed at people complaining about getting a better road. How ignorant and angry are some of Ashe county? Unbelievable.

The road will be an improvement for the local people that have to drive it every day.

JR, because we did nothing years ago is no excuse for not supporting improvement. We still have an economy that will benefit. GE, AEV, Christmas trees.... Whether the people like the new downtown or not, it definitely a draw on its own. While I agree the road will not bring new tourism, it will definitely go a long way to promote the current draws of Ashe.
We can cry over the past or we can look towards the future.

If the road had been built 10 years ago it might of helped but largely today it won't help. The businesses that left aren't coming back. New businesses will not find us more attractive to locate to (businesses do not like to move to impoverished areas). Tourists will be no more inclined to visit us after it's completed than before because we lack any real investment in tourist industries.
Every time something has come up to perhaps incentivize more tourism like a ski slope or some other attraction a bunch of nitwits gets together and kills it. The gallery and other shops in West Jefferson you can find dozens of those scattered throughout the Appalachian Mountains. They in themselves are not draws.

We have mentioned it before, those that we need in leadership positions will not have anything to do with it or can't get elected because they are not a puppet for the establishment. . So its an endless circle of mediocrity.

seriously? Ashe county has ALWAYS been afraid of change! Maybe when all the old farts die out of office and some new blood is breathed back into the government, things might change!

Its pointless to argue, but I will say that times have changed and the people of Ashe County are still living in the past. Our best and brightest leave right after graduation and never have anything to come back to. But it was good enough for my pappy and grand pappy it will be good enough for them. Our people have such ignorant logic.
The problems in Ashe County have been made by the failure to adapt to the rest of the world. I think Dog mentioned it, the whole county freaked out over 4 way stop signs. The people of Ashe is and always has been afraid of change.
