Politicians are Politicians, they're like lawyers.. Couldn't find a honest one if you searched a lifetime...

****'s welcome is worn out in this county. Its time for him to be moving on. Like basking said I dont see anyone else running I could support. I do however respect Gruf's opinion as I know he has reason. I will just take my chances with Donna.

EASY DOES IT

I don't see Donna as a person who allows herself to live by the philosophy of axe gtinding. I don't think she would do this unless she thinks she can raise the position up out of the sewage pit it has become. She has seen dysfunction at its worse. She knows the areas that need cleaning up. I do not think it is what she is about to go in doing anything but put integrity back into the commission. I don't think she would put her energy into it if it were just axe grinding. I think she is a woman of vision who wants the best for the citizens of Ashe. I say bring it on. We need better and we need the bar raised.

Gruf, there is already ax grinding and empire building going on with Poe and her current lackies. Might as well have an ax grinder that has a brain. So far, given the choices, I don't see a better one

I'm ready for some ax grinding. I hope the bottom of the barrel is what we have and have had.

I Completely agree with billygoat. Also has it occurred to anyone that Donna is dating William Sands, who is also a commissioner? That would give one couple a little too much power on the board. I agree Donna is smart and very capable but two commissioners that are a couple and one with an axe to grind equals bad for Ashe County. So nothing against Donna just think this is not the right time or for the right reasons.

It appears I must digress from the majority here regarding Donna Weaver. There is little doubt Donna has the expertise and background to be a commissioner (clearly, the bar is pretty low). Donna running for commissioner is a pursuit in the right direction for all the wrong reasons. A candidate with an axe to grind is bad news. (remember McMillian and his failed attempt). I have remained quiet, but personally, I find Donna to be a very arrogant empire builder. Her ego is perhaps second only to Judy Poe.

Been off the grid a few days and I just read this thread. I congratulate donna on her decision to run. I would advise Judy Poe to just stay in her basement and do taxes, and **** better start filing out resumes. I will also donate a case of Double A.

I have stated before, we can not bring national politics into local debates. If you don't like the system then you should be writing your representatives to change the system. You can not place the need for change on the DSS director. That is not her job, she does not have a say in the making those policies, but her job is to ensure those mandates and regulations are followed. No one has ever provided a shred of evidence that that is not the case but rather blame her for the counties problems.

Its not her fault that we have high unemployment, high poverty, and a rapidly aging population. However it is her job to make sure the programs meet the needs of these demographics. It also is her job and the DSS boards job to be advocates for her clients.

I think with the fact present that is is clear that she has done her job well despite the lack of support. If anything, the current and past commissioners, especially Judy Poe, have not done their jobs. Judy, how many jobs did you help to bring Ashe County? What policies did you put in place to stop the dependence on DSS? I will answer that for you. ZERO.

Basking. Poe was never on new river board. Poe addressed new river board one time and presented questions about their financials. But that was only contact with NRMH board. Ask sands, he knows who was on board.

Yes she was. Better go look again. It was covered extensively when the situation went down

Poe was never on new river board. William sands replaced Gary barber on new river board. Nathan miller, Kenny poteat, William sands, ken Richardson , Gary Blevins on de river board.

Weaver will certainly have my vote and I hope for some more fresh faces. I will always support Larry Rhodes if he is not sick and burned out on the whole mess. I'm ready for some people of reason and intelligence. I hope I'm not asking for too much.

Neither Judy or any of the other county commissioners from other counties served by New River that sat on the New River board bothered make New River provide the state required financial reports. I believe the state says they are supposed to provide these reports at least quarterly. Maybe monthly, I'd have to look it up again. But Judy and the others let them go on and on without disclosing their financial situation until New River was asking for more money.

Aw Shucks

Oops previous post was on wrong thread - the DSS director has a responsibility to do a job and that job is to provide services that are mandated by the federal government to the best of their abilities - Weaver did this and did it well. I'll definitely vote for her. I'm tired of Poe and her puppets running this county into the ground and setting us back half a century.

Daymark's services don't come close to those provided previously. Many patients "see" their doctors via video conference - it's hard to get an accurate read on patients that aren't even in the same room. And Judy, you were on the New River Board, why didn't you have a clue that they were in financial trouble long before it was too late for the agency?
