I'm sure there were some things that could have been improved. Given the size of the DSS budget, I think Donna should have given better explanations on where everything was really going. but yes, for the most part it seems to be personal. Donna did make one major mistake in standing her ground and also making the commissioners look like bumbling idiots when they questioned her. To be fair, they are bumbling idiots, but she embarrassed the people that had the power to fire her. At least she was smart enough and level headed enough to resign before they really screwed up the system and dissolved the DSS board

so it is a person thing more than a real problem. at least there were no problems with DSS that anyone ever actually pointed out or proved just he said she said and rumors. The paperwork and requirements of DSS must be enormous since it is both requirements of the feds and state. Just filling out the paperwork must be a nightmare.

I have known Donna for years and always had full confidence in her ability to operate the department and did not remember any real problems in the past other than complaints from some of the commissioners.

Winston, a couple election cycles ago republicans in the area got hardons for their county's DSS. In most of the counties the DSS budget is one of the highest budgets, if not the highest in the county. Clearly these commissioners felt that money was being wasted, and probably going to drug addicts and deadbeats. A couple counties even abolished their DSS boards and put control directly in the commissioners. Judy Poe was the ring leader for this in Ashe. And to make it worse, weaver wouldn't bow down to the commissioners. So it turned into a vindetta to get Donna out of the DSS

sorry dog thought being a smart sss was a requirement on this site. just wanted a couple questions answered not spend hours sifting the crap for a fact or two. It's a shame this site could serve a purpose and help the community if folks would just filter the bull and grow up. Sometimes I just hop on my soap box and bit preach a while I apologize...but the world in in a heap of hurt and we got to start somewhere....Thanks for answering my questions.

I appreciate your ability to stay on the subject for a couple seconds and answer my questions. I just could not remember any complaints about DSS in the news or even rumors in the past so why all the fuss now. Where did all the anti Donna Weaver crap come from? If you could be so focused for a couple more seconds I would like to know then go back to your name calling and childish games.

Tell her if she has a problem with that, she can leave her complaints at the liquor store. They will know how to get her message to us

Well drag queen I know you are not judy poe as you could not contain yourself on this site. However since day one you came right after a few of us. Given these facts you go tell your sweet butt aunt Judy her rein is over in Ashe county. Tell her the Dog said so.

Knuckle Dragger, if Judy Poe crapped on your head and told you it was snow, you'd want the commissioners to write her a check to build a ski slope. We already know where you stand regarding anything she is involved in.

The difference is you're assuming while I know. Live in your world of make believe if you so choose.

And if there were these serious problems within the dss the state would have come in and you would have known it loud and clear.

Notice when the people have been asked for specifics about the so called problems within dss none have been presented.

To answer your questions:

How long has JP Poe been on the DSS Board?

She was appointed to the DSS board after the current County Commissioners were seated and after she lost the primaries for a County Commissioner seat back in 2014 (She also lost the primary this year).

How long has there been a serious problem(s) with DSS.

There are none if there had been you would have heard about it through paper or social media long before politicians took action.

What are the problems..

No problems for the perspective of the citizens. JPP and others are still purging the DSS of anyone even remotely loyal to Donna Weaver, who worked in the department for 40 years. I'm not sure how many of those 40 she led the department.

I can answer one of your questions. Poe was appointed to the dss board by the current board on or about their second or third meeting upon taking office.

I want to see the micro managing county manager replaced. I agree with heels in that Poe will do whatever she can at this point to make Donna look bad. I really think she was put on that board to get rid of Donna and we all know she is tight with the manager.

Poe is going to create mess to make it look like Donna left a mess. Until we get rid of her completely she will continue to be a thorn in our sides.

I have said all along I am sure there are many changes that can be made in the DSS office, but we need competent people to make those changes.

Aw shucks

Canoe may be a Poe supporter trying to justify pushing out an effective director that was respected by many. Hopefully that director will become a commissioner in November, bringing a little class and professionalism to the current board - something that's been seriously lacking with the exception of Sands and Rhodes.

Actually, it's quite good as far as administration of the programs offered. Here's a question: Other counties make their DSS meeting minutes available online to the public. Why doesn't Ashe County do the same? Other counties also allow members of the public to attend the meetings, as long as there is room for those in attendance. Of course, confidential information is not shared, but Ashe County shares nothing.

Dragg in order for you to be taken serious you are going to have to me more fourth coming. Otherwise you are sounding like a former employee with a grudge. Anyone can claim there are problems, we know that from the budget.

This isn't a new problem. It's a problem that has been there for a long time.
