The New Quality Plus Gas Station

Ingles is supposed to start selling gas Wednesday. This should be interesting.

I had heard that Quality sells Shell gasoline, so I decided to contact them and ask if this is true and why the spread had grown so much in a few weeks.

They told me their gasoline is often Shell but they do buy other brands, but it is always top-tier gasoline. This seems like a big deal to me, because the first thing a dealership will tell you to do is buy top-tier gas if you are having spark knock or driveability problems. And there are Shell's clean valves and injector commercials on TV.

On the spread he said it typically runs 30 to 40 cents, but he didn't comment on why it was 15 when they opened.

As a plug for some of our local gas stations, Valero is on the list of top-tier gasolines.

Sorry Jr, your a bit behind the times - Colvard and Gambill have been out of the gas business for five years or more.

I've noticed no change at the gas station I go to, that is it seems as busy as always. I've done business there for 30 years (except the years I was out west). I will continue going there.

I don't use Wal-mart's gas station and I don't see myself using Ingles or Quality either. I dislike shopping at Ingles anyway as everything is higher there so cheaper gas is not really going to entice me to go in there.

Anyone cheering though because locally owned stations will close should realize that your local gas station owner isn't the one that's been price fixing. If they try to charge less then Gambill or Colvard charges them more for gas and have for decades.

Oh boy a gas price war. They have been pricing together for decades.

Talked to an Ingles employee that said Ingles gas price will 'always be $.01 lower than the

surrounding stations'.

Looks like the Valero is your best place to buy.

I was by the Valero station in Jefferson today. Their zero ethanol premium is .20 more than premium with ethanol.

Where the small what house was, John Kathy owned it. He sold it to him. John Kathy owns the bigger parcel as well and sold him a small part of that. Then they got permission from the state to build on the road, after he bought all properties around it controlling the road.

I don't like the bait and switch routine which is similar to starting the zero ethanol gas at 15 cents above the ethanol and then stair stepping it up to 43 a couple of months later. Other than a couple of gallons a month for mowers, I'm not buying from them.

The white square cinder block house was in the trivette property. The state owned the property between a he roads. I will research it today. I know it was a lot of money either way.

Cooper I believe they spent around 275k where the small white house was. 500k for trivette property, 50k to 100k for a small piece off the large tract. Then 210k on excavating the project, plus cost of moving poles and building the station.

The diesel fuel at the quality joint is cheaper than the gas at most of the other stations.

CooperFarms

The trivette property was 500K by itself. I forgot the small strip between it and the new road.

JR please tell us all where have you seen 84 octane so we can avoid it.

Management

They spent 210,000 on the total project of moving dirt. Then whatever it cost to build the station.

Management

Posted 10:30 am, 08/02/2015

They spent more than any 500k for that land. That was the cost of their out parcel and a very small portion of the gas station. They also had to buy the lot at the road and a small piece off the large tract behind it. They got around 850k in the purchase of the land. That is before moving dirt or building the gas station.

Gas store owners are liars just like car dealers. Right Blanch?

CooperFarms

There must have been a need for both these stations. The Quality station has a lot of customers

They gave $500,000 for the land and about half that much to move the overhead utilities - that's before they ever got started on the site.

Wilco and the smaller stations will see lower sales and a few will not make it. Ingles has a grocery / gas promotion that will drive their sales.

It costs no more to ship 84 Octane than it does to ship 88 Octane.

Stations have marked up premium gas for years. Not really a new phenomenon. I remember years ago working at Ashe Abattoir, Dallas was making oftentimes only 1/2 cent t a 1 cent on regular but the premium was marked up 20-30 cents.

Same was true when I lived in SLC in the late 90s, Dee made at Southgate Chevron about 3-5 cents on regular a gallon and made about 25-35 cents on premium.

Personally I never saw a need for this station or the one they are building at Ingles.
