Lol, you have a higher opinion of the Vannoy nane than most of the people in the county.

I actually served as a director of a board affiliated with the YMCA in N.C. In fact it was a huge $$ maker and very successful. That being said it does take folks with a clear vision. With the Vannoy name behind it I would think others would follow. There is a real need for a place for the youth to go here- The pools at the Y's are extremely popular but like all indoor pools VERY expensive to operate. The basketball areas do very well as do any and all side rooms for activities from exercising to bridge or card games-the list goes on and on. IT would surely be an asset to the community and they are always used to promote an area, which we sure could use. In the winter it would be a huge asset to any and all who decided to use it- there is more to a Y then just bell bars & exercise equipment .

The folks who operate them and the volunteers who help staff them are great folks-and the youth in this area could use positive mentoring.

And that is the biggest reason that ashe probably won't ever have a Y

I'm sure there are many people just like you that don't see a need.

I for one fail to see the need for a Y in Ashe......

And I doubt Novant would support that type of investment at AMH for a wellness center. Possibly some grants could help or there might be a big donor that would support that.

Fins

I dont disagree that a Y would be an asset. But just like you said, the support isnt in Ashe. Especially to get it off the ground.

They aren't cutting major services at Canon, only services that does not meet the needs of Avery County. I give them credit for running a better business model than they have in the past.

I think there are similar characteristics. The base of a YMCA would serve is similar. However to your point Ashe does not have the donors willing to help something like a YMCA get started.

In my opinion it would be a great asset to the county, I just don't think the money is there to get it started.

Fins

But like you said, the only reason they don't need donor money to stay open is that they are cutting most services and relocating them to Boone. But that still doesn't change the point. Avery and Ashe can't be compared equally.

I never said anything about the land and building. Almost every hospital in the country rely on donors for major investments like that. I'm simply stating that they do not use donor money in the day to day operations. Really, it named after Charles Canon, I can only imagine how much money the Canons have given the hospital.

On a side note. The new facility in Blowing Rock is being built on mostly donor money.

Fins

The current cannon hospital would have never been built if not for donations. The construction budget and the land itself were all donations. The location was a very profitable quarry before the hospital was built. The property owner was making more leasing to a quarry company than selling out to the hospital. People with money wanted it closer to certain country clubs. If not for donations, they would still be patching the old building together to try to keep it running.

You are wrong on the hospital. Donations are used for minor equipment, everything else is bought from the revenue generated. Do your research, many of the services are being transferred to Boone because they are not creating revenue. They are only keeping the services they can sustain.

Fins

No they aren't. That's my point. It's the donations that keep both going in Avery county. It's also what keeps their hospital so well equipped, and made the Linville Hose jockey department a paid department. None could survive if they had to rely on just the natives.

Also, the Y over there is located where it is, to also function as a physical therapy facility, like the watauga wellness center.

I know and agree there are some very deep pockets in Avery. However both financially are able to sustain without the money from donors.
