2019/2020 Ashe County Budget

Just an observation. My granddad was a pilot. He passed recently. He enjoyed flying into the Ashe airport for sport, because it wasn’t always easy. He’d purchase fuel then normally head to Roanoke
or Hot Springs.

Vannoy keeps/flies their jet out of Wilkes.

4 cylinder that airport brings nothing to the economy of Ashe county except a couple dozen plane owners and a summer home. For all the money we have spent on that landing strip we could have built a middle school and not had to borrow a red cent.

It's like dad always used to say, there is no such thing as a free lunch....

4cylinder, just because the federal or state money will be used by someone else doesn’t make it ok for the county to be wasteful. If one county would set a precedent about being frugal, maybe it would catch on. Even if not, we could be proud of doing the right thing. Besides, you miss one key part. For every grant, the county has to match a certain percentage of funds. Usually around 10%. So for every million dollars in grants the county gets for that money pit, the county has to cough up $100,000 that could be used somewhere more beneficial for the county. Those grants are not free money! Just like some of us have to pay for your welfare.

And when the fed/state runs short on money and can no longer make these grants, how will these projects continue?

Hot rod your first statement is true for 99.9% of us in Ashe county. I wasn't aware you were talking about grant funds. However the county budget reflects money that comes from us as a county and left over grant funds can only be spent on the intended use. Also these grant funds as fins pointed out are from our tax dollars we paid in. One day soon we will get stuck with paying for it all. Our county has put millions in that landing strip for the last 10 years to only benefit a handful of rich people not even residents of the county.

Let's get something straight. I, personally, get exactly zero use from the Ashe County airport. And I understand how that big number could be alarming. But, I also realize from reading about this budget and others in the past that the vast majority of money spent on these projects comes from state and federal grant programs with very little if any match by the county. If Ashe County didn't pursue those funds, I can assure you that other counties/states would. It doesn't translate into "money saved" so if it's gonna be spent, it might as well be spent here.

Jack, unused Fed/State grant monies that are set aside for specific projects would not roll over into the general fund like it would if (for example) the Sheriff's Office had fuel expense money left over due to lower gas prices.

Left over money goes back to the general fun hotrod.

So you think it’s a good idea to keep pissing money down that hole? Let me give you another clue. Federal and state money has to come from somewhere too. You may not understand it, but some of us pay taxes and don’t want those wasting our money either.

If all the keyboard cowboys would get a couple of quarters out of the ashtray and buy a newspaper, they'd realize they are leaving out a large part of the conversation here...

Excerpted paragraph for anyone who doesn't have a subscription.

"At Ashe County Airport, the budget is $333,978, of which, $69,103 is new money, while the rest is carry-over funding budgeted from previous years that has not been spent, according to an email from Ashe County Finance Officer Sandy Long. The county’s appropriation toward the airport will secure $4,687,214 in federal and state funding for Ashe County Airport projects, Long said."

Yeah, but those should be resold. At some point, fuel and supplies should be self supportive.

The biggest expense at the airport is $140,000 for aviation supplies/ fuels, oil.

Why does the airport need $300,000 for an annual budget? There should be little annual expense there after they’ve made all the improvements.

The most wasteful spending in county history and it continues year after year. We must elect so breathers that will give their word to get rid of it.

Another third of a million down the toilet on the airport....

What happened to High Country Helicopters.....seems to be dragging on forever to open, and I hope the airport is making some revenue off that?

About 229k to county school construction from the lottery......
