Five people are facing criminal charges after a 34-year-old woman's body was found in a vehicle that had been abandoned in a wooded area of Surry County.

The body of Rebecca Plitt, 34, of Sparta, was found April 3 by deputies with the Surry County Sheriff's Office in the Watershed-Pine Ridge community.

During the course of an investigation, the Surry County Sheriff’s Office ruled Plitt's death a homicide.

Deputies said Plitt's body was found in a trunk of a motor vehicle abandoned in a wooded area on Watershed Road.

Plitt had been reported missing out of Alleghany County, and the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office was actively working on a missing person investigation.

After Plitt's body was found, the Surry County Sheriff’s Office notified the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to assist with processing the crime scene and the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office to assist with the investigation.

The investigation revealed that Plitt had been assaulted in multiple jurisdictions during a time of captivity.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office (Virginia), Grayson County Sheriff’s Office (Virginia), Mount Airy Police Department, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Marshals Service, were involved in the investigation.

As a result of the investigation, the following people have been charged in connection with Plitt's death:

Kenneth Dawson, 31, who is homeless, faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, kidnapping, robbery, assault, concealment of a human body, larceny, possession of stolen vehicle and conspiracy to commit murder. Dawson is in custody without bail in New River, Virginia.
Desire Billings, 24, of Sparta, faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, assault, kidnapping and robbery. Billings is in custody without bail in New River, Virginia.
Kimberly Bruner, 41, of Mount Airy, is charged with kidnapping, assault and larceny. Bruner is being held in custody at the Surry County Detention Center in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Stephanie Wall, 37, Mount Airy, is charged with kidnapping, obstruction of justice, assault and larceny. Wall is being held in custody at the Surry County Detention Center in lieu of $110,000 bail.
Bradley Hawks, 33, of Lowgap, is charged with kidnapping and assault on a female. Hawks is being held in custody at the Surry County Detention Center in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Ok FYI just so everyone knows, yes Rebecca was murdered, and yes it is still under you investigation. The reason no more info is being given out is because the sheriff's office's, FBI, US Marshalls are still working endlessly to obtain any and all in on the case as to why hat happened, names and location of any other ppl involved. They are not releasing any more.info because they don't want any other suspects to be able to flee she that if there is any can be apprehended w/o anything a problem. Ppl need.to realize that Mrs. Plitt has two young children, a brother, and other family whom are very distraught over all of this, there is a lot of rumors and speculation is flying due to unknown facts. Afic, from the first story I heard last week it was most likely drug related. If you go look at the mug shots you can see that is probably the truth.

This case is eerily similar to the case were that Littleton guy from Fleetwood, and I think five others, kidnapped, beat, and tortured the man named Edmondson. They were charged with murder but I don't think the body was ever found.

This story was first trumpeted on another platform as pure gossip. There’s nothing wrong with questioning the validity of such a story, esp. given the little information provided to WXII. No name was given and a major interstate runs through Surry. It could’ve been a woman from Nunavut, Canada for all anyone knows. Law enforcement does the public a huge disservice by not releasing the identities of the other three suspects. Assuming she was killed in such a vicious manner, I don’t care about your little investigation, I want to know if the guy behind me at Dollar Mart is wanted for possibly butchering a woman to death.

Nobody was joking or saying she was hiding out. We were just trying to figure out if the story were true or not. I'm sorry for her children. They should not have to deal with this type of pain in their lives. In general if there is a situation like this then there is more news coverage than what there has been. Especially after a week. There was just a murder in the past day or so in Deep Gap and info was released.

I am a family member of rebecca, this is not a rumor or not made up. I loved her and she will and already is deeply missed. It would be greatly appreciated if everyone on here that is saying that shes just hiding out would stop. I wish she was. Her kids are devastated. It was on wxii12 news in surry county. 5 people are involved and they got 2 in custody for questions now.
