Jack the riper... you are so crude and so uneducated, you can t read. Phyllis doesn’t have the degree, yet others don’t and can’t apply. That is worn. Bres gets more resources and help, and that is illegal in most counties. You only care about your immoral life and don’t seem to have an education but thanks for helping everyone who reads this see that there are wrong immoral unfairness to this county. Jack, do you need a job?

I can't read? You better read my post again and get a little help this time with your reading comprehension. Obviously nothing illegal has taken place or bufurt would have locked someone up. I employ concubines, are you interested?

All I know about the Ashe County BOE is that my wife, with almost 30 years of experience as Administrative Assistant/ Executive Secretary, wished to apply for a secretarial position in the school system. She was denied not just a job, but even an interview, because she 'didn't have a degree'. Their loss.....

And yet another new poster has said nothing about what is being done wrong, illegal, or immoral. They only dont like the superintendent based on her lack of degrees. What does a degree hanging on a wall do for the students? Nothing.

You are wrong. Obviously you don’t talk to any teacher or employee and maybe are a director which is the only ones that are not under her wrath. Maybe with Donnie, but not with reeves or holden, did Phillis run the show. She didn’t lead meetings, evaluate employees, and she didn’t control the meetings. They did. And she isn’t qualified. I have a friend who wanted to apply for the secretary position and was told she didn’t have the degree. Are you kidding? We tell people in ashe that they don’t have a degree. Phyllis doesn’t have a superintendent’s license, and EdS, a masters, never been in a classroom, and never been an administrator. And she evaluates them without the training or degree. Sassy62, you are so wrong. How can you tell others they can’t apply, and yet, she can continue to have a position and you say she is qualified. Name one superintendent in no without a masters degree. She tells principals what to do and teachers and has written checks all her life? That doesn’t make you qualified. Reeves, holden, and Johnson were at least high school principals.

When holden left for more money and better beniefits, the board lied and said it was temporary. Phyllis took interim off her name and that was it. The public and employees never were told. Board members told others that Krider was next in line. He has his degree and certification and she demoted him by not demoting him so he couldn’t get her job. Callie is moving to human resource at Christmas and then to Superindentent as soon as phyllis leaves. It’s the plan. Get on board. Teachers at blue ridge are put under a gag order not to speak about their school. It’s jut not fair.

You guys are pissing in the wind. Our superintedent is more than highly qualified. She has been running our school system ever since Donnie Johnson retired. Reeves and Holden were beyond worthless. That's what you get when you hire so called professionals from the flatlands. Worthless. When our BOE decides we need a new leader, they better hire from within. Hiring from without has produced two quality leaders in the last 40 years. Dr. Jackson and Donnie Johnson. No one of any ability will come here to work for what we pay unless they are from here.

3 new school board members would be a nice start

2 new members in 2 years

New highly qualified superintendent with strong leadership skills and knowledge- knowledge about running a system - knowledge about school culture - someone vested in the community - someone that represents us well

Again what is it you want to change?

I happen to like Williams and the wonderful daughter he raised.

Cutworm - agreed

Rea - we should all be concerned. I want my grandkids to receive a solid education and be able to stay in the county and make a decent living. Strong schools means strong growth. I want my grandkids’ teachers to feel appreciated and respected. You are right - we aren’t headed in the right direction. Things must change and change starts at the top. We need enthusiastic and knowledgeable people with EXPERIENCE. I guess when I think about it - we really have to blame ourselves. We vote for the board and the board hires the superintendent which sets the tone. Voters need to act.

As famously said many times, politicians are like diapers; they should be changed often and for the same reason.

I have children in the school system and I am concerned with the direction we are headed. I don't have a particular person in mind to run the system, just that we need all new leadership to take us in the right direction.

I hear Beckworth runs the schools, with concerns directed toward his children.

From reading most of the posts on this thread, it appears the major issues are the same ones that were issues 1-2 years ago. First, PY should not have been given the superintendent position and this was allowed to happen because of a majority ruling by our current school board members. This occurred during the middle of an active school year, was supposed to be a temporary position, and had to get special consideration from the state board because it is unheard of to allow someone without the proper training and experience to do any job- especially one this important. The state board trusted what they were being told and made this approval without knowing all the background information. Another issue is the favoritism shown for PY’s daughter and her school, BRES. Both of these individuals are workers and no one can deny them that, but it’s how they got to their positions without going through the years of training and experience that others that were looked over had to go thorough and did not receive the jobs and pay raises that they should have. Ashe County has lost some fine educators to others school systems and to the the State Dept. Of Public Instruction because we didn’t recognize and reward them for their hard work and effort. B. Ashley and K. Simmons went to on to hold reputable positions with NCDPI, S. Richardson, C.Price, and R. Shepherd went on to other school districts and became principals with stellar reputations for making great educational leaders. It’s time for change and I’m not sure the current people that are running for school board is the answer, but it’s a start. The change we really need is for L. Be kworth and C.Jones to relinquish their positions because it is them you can thank or blame for a lot of the current issues we are seeing.

That's why we don't need Holden. We need a clean slate. Out with the old and in with the new. Can't you read between the lines? Beckworth and Jones is next.

Raeford, every single board memeber has connections. King’s daughter teaches, both of Beckworth’s children are teachers and his wife did work for the system, Williams uses the old West Jefferson building for his business, and Polly’s daughter and niece teach and her sister did teach when she was elected. It is a small county, all have connections. According to Raeford’s comments, he has a personal agenda and doesn’t know the facts. Who does he want hired? Some of the directors and principals have people who are related to them. It’s a small town Raeford. What’s really your agenda?

Rea. If youre worried about favoritism coming from that candidate you haven’t been paying attention to the posts. There are board members with grown kids working in the system. I bet with some digging you could find lots of favoritism from the 5 sitting members.

Raeford

Holden has too many connections in the system. Favoritism would relevant. Hope someone else steps up.

The school board’s job is to hire/Fire superintendents and make policy.

The current board has given the county 3 superintendents in the last 8 years - shows they have a hard time hiring people to stay or maybe they don’t want them to stay?

How can a board made up of people in their 60s, 70s and 80s help
Kids?

Youth brings enthusiastism, stamina and new ideas - most importantly- relevant ideas.

The school sys must prepare kids for a global work force.
