The former AG of Virginia has complained about Duke energy.Trying to get legislation in Virginia and NC passed to call for a raise on utilities whenever a storm occurs.Storm Securitization and they say monies would be returned once the repairs are made. When Duke raises rates everyone that uses electricity is affected directly or indirectly.

Its not just electric the state gave this area to Frontier natural gas if you want natural gas you have to buy it from them the problem is they wont run the lines to hook you up. There's a development behind Hardin Park school who wants to hook up but the gas company wont run the lines to them.

Just another illegal monopoly under the State Constitution.

Sec. 34. Perpetuities and monopolies.

Perpetuities and monopolies are contrary to the genius of a free state and shall not be allowed.

Here are the problems I have with Bremco. No true board elections only perpetual members given insurance. A box at ASU for football. Block of tickets for ice hockey, the continuous giving away of money that could be used to reduce power cost, and the salary of Dougie that is the second highest in the nation among co-ops. They run the place like its a for profit company and its not.

JT another interesting internet quote A natural monopoly exists when average costs continuously fall as the firm gets larger. An electric company is a classic example of a natural monopoly. Once the gargantuan fixed costs involved with power generation and power lines is payed, each additional unit of electricity costs very little; the more units sold, the more the fixed costs can be spread, creating a reasonable price for the consumer. Having two electric companies split electricity production, each with their own power source and power lines would lead to a near doubling of price. Clearly, competition, the flagship of the American economy, is not always the answer.

Could it be that no one else whats to deliver electricity in Ashe due to the high infrastructure cost? Maybe the JT power company could be formed, registered and regulated to do so.

Just because no one wants to complete with you does not mean you are breaking any law.

JT this is an interesting statement from the the Utilities Commission web site. Retail electric service is provided to consumers in North Carolina by investor-owned utilities (IOUs) and university-owned utilities subject to the jurisdiction of the Commission, electric membership corporations (EMCs), and municipally-owned electric utilities. A customer obtains electric service from the utility providing service to that area. The Commission regulates all aspects of service provided by the IOUs, but does not regulate the retail rates of EMCs or municipally-owned electric systems.

To me this indicates that the Commission does have some regulatory over site
of the coops. On another section of this same website the term regulated coop is utilized to head up a list of the various electrical coops in the state.

JT, you are not incorrect, BREMCO is a monopoly. The State of NC Utilities Commission was created by hte legislature to regulate utility companies. This legislatively appointed group conducts their over site through the granting of monopolies to various entities, public and private.

The Feds stepped in years ago to break up the telecommunications monopolies, I have not really seen or heard any buss that this was being considered for the power utilities.

The nature of the generation and distribution of electrical power and the infrastructure investment and development costs to not lend its self very well to a free market system at the present time. If the generation and distribution networks were held by separate entities or were forced to operate as separate entities the end user may have the option to purchase electricity in the futures market at a fixed price and then pay a fee to the distribution company to deliver the product to their end use site.

This type of pricing and delivery is how much of the commercial natural gas purchases are made.
It is worth noting that the Utilities Commission does not control Co-Ops such as BREMCO and that the NC Constitution makes no exception for any Monopoly

Lol a “monopoly”? How?

Ask your self what other power company can you buy power from in Ashe? Once you have figured out the answer go read the NC Constitution

All utlities are essentially monopolies Billy. I mean you don't see competing phone, competing electric, competing water utilities in the same areas. That by definition makes them monopolies.

Since Operation Roundup is a non profit organization it is possible they are spending the money to keep that status for it. Which means they could afford to help more people locally than they do.

I still say they operate illegally as a monopoly under the NC Constitution.

I know most probably read this story and got warm and fuzzy feelings and thought how wonderful it is that BREMCO sent a crew of linemen to Boliva to build power for some savages. But I had different thoughts. I want to know why the **** they are using our money to do charity projects in South America. Just watch, they will be asking for another rate increase before we know it. At the very least, if they are going to spend our money without asking, spend it here locally! They are a bunch of crooks.
