Cost to rent a county owned building seems to be a little unfair

According to the NCDHHS there are only 7 licensed daycares in Ashe County. And maybe you're right. Maybe all the daycares need to be audited. Especially since some of the owners write off their second homes as staff retreats on their taxes, yet their staff has never been offered the chance to retreat there. I guess, just like everything else in this county, it's all about your name, who you know, and who you are sharing a bed with.

There are over 12 private daycare providers here in ashe county. Why should ashe county taxpayers pay to keep up one daycare such as mount Jefferson daycare. No one is asking to give these hard working people,e taxpayers dollars to help them pay their bills. All these other day cares manage to pay their bills, workers, feed the kids, and maintain a five star rating as mount Jefferson. So why can’t mjcd? They have always had their hand out to county taxpayers for extra money. Looks like their board needs to do a through audit of their salary and expenses.

So apparently Mt. Jefferson has bought the land but is already in the hole. Imagine how far in the red they will be in a year when the building is done?

It looks like the county would be willing to help their child care centers. According to recent information from the infant/ toddler forum there are 70 infant/toddlers on waiting lists to get into a daycare. If the county cared about the children as much as they care about sprucing up the town in order to draw in tourists, helping to build new centers would be more of a priority.
On another note, I still don't understand how the owner of the daycare at the west Jefferson school building gets away with only paying $1 a year. Unless it's because her husband was a teacher and school board member or maybe her daughter, "Ms. Bentley", pays a visit to the school board or county commissioners on a regular basis. Also, does the west jefferson school building have a sprinkler system? Because the daycare is licensed for 140 children. Somehow she gets by with that too.
And Ashe Developmental Day doesn't play any rent for the county owned building they are in. ????
Something needs to give. The children of the county should be higher up on the agenda for getting some help from the county commissioners. If parents can't find or afford quality daycare then they can't work which means more people seeking government assistance. It's a vicious cycle that needs to be addressed in this county.

Mole, why do you have a problem with this transaction. The fact that you know about it means it was done in a public manner. At the time Ashe Central was leased to the Partnership there was no suitable space available for DSS to expand into. The new courthouse was built knowing there was not enough space for the current DSS operations, much less growth into expanded unfunded mandated services. The transaction was vetted by Council on Government and determined to fall within acceptable guidelines.

Does anyone remember when the county leased the old ashe central high school to the partnership for children for $1 per year? How about when the director of social services, that sat on the partnership for children board, then leased space off the partnership for children in the old ashe central school for $100,000 per year. That one definitely didn't pass the smell test.

Wilkesboro is building a new store. Store now is rented from J C Faw and the town is suing JC over the Taco Bell mess.

TN and KY have a powerful liquor lobby, but NC has the Baptist lobby that even advocates for complete prohibition. They’re cool with “classy” things like cigarettes and the “education” lottery, and they’ll turn a blind eye to video poker, but they want to regulate what and when you drink, because Jesus. That will never change.

Yes it’s been tried, but Jack and I didn’t officially endorse the idea and push it.

It has been tried many times before. The legislature is afraid of losing a penny in revenue, and also the local influence they receive. If a local jurisdiction did something the people in Raleigh really did not like, don't think they could not find a reason to close or move a store.

I could get completely behind a movement to privatize the liquor store system in NC.

They had little storage Timmy so they did indeed add on warehouse space. During holidays its a continuous job for one or two employees just to keep the shelves stocked. The space could be doubled.

This topic really makes me feel good. The fact that this is the only issue currently that anyone can come up with to complain about reaffirms all we have achieved. We got Bufurt out of the sheriff’s office, Roark out of a commissioner seat, Bucky out of the sheriff’s office, the jail is undergoing reform, Yearick is gone as county manager, Rose is out as commissioner, Roark is gone from his county job, Rose is gone from his job as police chief. Life is good.
The down side is now I need to find us a new mission for us to undertake. What’s everyone’s thoughts on expanding the ABC store?

only if we can privatize it

Didn't they just add on, or was that just storage?

The only explanation I can offer is the op realizes the corrupt PAST decisions Yearick and his boys and girl have made and is questioning these decisions. The answers lie in the minutes of the meetings. Happy hunting.
