Actually, I think ASU has already required all employees to get vaccinated. I know several employees ans they have been vaccinated for months. I think they did clinics for students too. Not sure if they required students to do it or not, but I think they got pretty much 100% vaccinated.

It will be interesting to watch Watauga when the students return the end of next month. I guarantee you no state supported school will require vaccination.

Interesting that a judge ruled in favor of a hospital where 100 employees went to court refusing to take the vaccine that the hospital said everyone was required to take or be fired. I haven't seen if the ruling has been appealed yet.

US COVID-19 Trends 06/13/2021

The COVID-19 situation is continuing to marginally improve. The US Mortality Rate is holding steady at 1.79% and the Seven-Day Average of Daily New Cases dropped to 14,366.43 new cases per day which is close the lowest total since 03/29/2020 (13,965.57). The average did drop to 14,282.86 on 06/11/2021 before a slight rebound on the next day. The US added 100,565 new cases and 2,239 COVID-19 related deaths over the past week as the percentage of the US which has tested positive for COVID-19 increased to 10.123%. Historically, on this date in 2020, the US was reporting 2,610,005 total cases, 115,059 related deaths. The US Mortality Rate stood at 5.58% and was averaging 22,798.43 new cases per day with 0.624% of the US having been tested positive for the virus.

NC COVID-19 Trends 06/13/2021

NC added 3,029 new cases and 114 COVID-19 related deaths during the week which increased the NC Mortality Rate to 1.32% (+0.01%). The NC Seven-Day Average of Daily New Cases decreased slightly from the previous week to 432.71 which is historically around where the numbers were on May 09, 2020. On this date in 2020, NC had 41,487 total confirmed cases, 1,127 related deaths, a mortality rate of 2.72% and was averaging 1,080.29 new cases per day. Currently around 9.6% of the population of NC has tested positive for COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. NC has launched a vaccine lottery. In an effort to spur more people to take the vaccine, everyone who has been vaccinated has been entered into 4 drawings for a million-dollar prize. Frist drawing is 06/23/2021 with subsequent drawings every two weeks.

Local COVID-19 Trends 06/13/2021

As expected, the lack of cases in Ashe did not last long. Ashe ended the week reporting 8 active cases and added 11 total cases for the week. Alleghany is reporting 4 active cases and added 4 total cases while Watauga is showing 7 active cases and an increase of 8 total cases for the week. The last published active case count out of Wilkes was 65 on 06/07/2021. As near as I can tell from the NC Dashboard, Wilkes added 43 total cases for the week. There were no additional COVID-19 related deaths reported in the 4-county area.

Thanksgiving and Christmas were the breaking points for all of them. Those that didn't get it at Thanksgiving got at Christmas. They then spread the joy around. That doesn't explain today but all the mexicans coming in and out of Wilkes is also a source.

Looking at the populations of Ashe, Alleghany, Watauga and Wilkes and the total number of cases reported since the beginning of the pandemic about 8.29% of Ashe County's population has tested positive for COVID-19. Watauga's positive rate is 8.46%, while Alleghany is at 9.54% and Wilkes shows a ***ulative infection rate of 9.92%.

While Wilkes is the highest in the local region, the difference isn't really significate and could be explained by milder Wilkes County winters which allowed the population to be more active during the late fall and winter months while the mountain counties were impacted by winter precipitation. That is just speculation on my part though.

I'm pretty sure it is. Way too many in wilkes have some delusion that the vaccine is sacrilege

It seems Wilkes is having a harder time dealing with the virus than neighboring counties. Is their vaccination rates lower?

I've spent most of the day reading about Fauci's emails. It seems the hype around them is more interesting than the content. A lot of the things he's being accused of being connected to isn't in them

US COVID-19 Trends 06/05/2021

As we enter the 18th month since COVID-19 came into our collective awareness, the situation continues to improve. The US Mortality Rate is holding steady at 1.79% and the Seven-Day Average of Daily New Cases dropped to 15,298.71 new cases per day which is the lowest total since 03/29/2020 (13,965.57). The US added 107,071 new cases and 3,064 COVID-19 related deaths over the past week as the percentage of the US which has tested positive for COVID-19 increased to 10.090%. Some of the more interesting COVID-19 news from the past week was the release of Fauci's emails in response to a FOI request. ( https://www.usatoday.com/in...510491002/)

NC COVID-19 Trends 06/05/2021

In North Carolina, as with the US situation, the COVID-19 numbers are improving. NC added 3,515 new cases and 73 COVID-19 related deaths during the week while the NC Mortality Rate remained steady at 1.31%. The NC Seven-Day Average of Daily New Cases dropped to 425.43 on 06/01/2021 (mostly due to the lack of updates over Memorial Day holiday) and currently stands at 483.57 which is about where NC was at around the middle of May 2020. Currently around 9.6% of the population of NC has tested positive for COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. While some states are enrolling vaccinated individuals into million-dollar lotteries, in NC, some counties are offering $25.00 gift cards to people taking the shot…

Local COVID-19 Trends 06/05/2021

Locally, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, the COVID-19 numbers continue to improve. For the first time since I began tracking local active cases on 05/30/2020, Ashe County is not listing a single active case while Alleghany is showing 2 cases and Watauga is showing 6 active cases. Ashe did not report any additional cases (actually the total cases count dropped by one during the week) for the week, Alleghany added 2 cases, Watauga added 3 cases and Wilkes was up by 70 cases and 2 deaths.

I've been with the triplets all week. But I won't be able to help with who stole the David Allen Coe shirts. None of us have had any use for clothing since the middle of last week. We went to the bike rally and it turned into a nude fest. I will make further inquiry as soon as I can round up the triplets again. I'm pretty sure they are here somewhere.

According to AppHealth today, June 6, zero active cases in Ashe!!! Thanks to all those you got vaccinated and all the people who made it possible.

I'm sure we will have a few flare ups but hopefully we are on the right path.

US COVID-19 Trends 05/29/2021

The US, as a whole added 155,242 COVID-19 cases and 4,742 COVID-19 related deaths over the last week. The Seven-Day Average of Daily New Cases for the US dropped to 21,346.86 on 05/25/2021 which is the lowest point since 04/03/2020 (20,705.86). The average rebounded a bit to finish the week at 22,177.43. The US Mortality Rate, after remaining steady at 1.78% over the past month, increased 0.01% to 1.79% on 05/28/2021. At this point in 2020, the US Mortality Rate was 5.90%. With the mask mandates expiring and the number of people refusing the vaccine along with the travel associated with the holiday weekend, it would not be shocking to see a minor surge in cases in the upcoming weeks.

NC COVID-19 Trends 05/29/2021

In North Carolina, 5,400 COVID-19 cases and 120 COVID-19 related deaths were added over the last seven days. The NC Seven-Day Average of Daily New Cases dropped t0 771.43 new cases per day which is right about where it was this time last year (759.14). For historical perspective, the average was increasing and peaked on 07/17/2020 at 2,007.43 cases per day before beginning a gradual drop until around the middle of August which probably coincided with the reopening of public schools and the start of the return to campus at Universities. As with the US Mortality Rate, the NC Mortality rate increased slightly to 1.31% after being at 1.30% for the last 4 weeks.

Local COVID-19 Trends 05/29/2021

Locally, the COVID-19 situation continues to appear to be under control. Active case counts in Ashe, Alleghany, and Watauga total 26 compared to 34 cases a year ago, as Ashe added 7 cases for the week, Alleghany increased by a single case and Watauga was up 9 cases. Wilkes, according to the NC COVID-19 Dashboard added 50 cases for the week. There were no additional COVID-19 related deaths added this week.

Fins,

As you, I suspect the actual case counts to be much higher than the numbers officially published. Ran across this article (Asymptomatic coronavirus infections contribute to over 50% of spread, according to UChicago study - UChicago Medicine) which cites research results that put the number of symptomatic cases at 14% to 20% of all cases. More than likely, out of the 80% to 86% which would make up the nonsystematic cases, very few would generate a test under the protocols the CDC and WHO established once reliable testing became available. If these numbers are actuate, rather than 33,103,526 US cases and a Mortality Rate of 1.78%, it would be closer to 132,500,000 cases and a Mortality Rate of 0.45%. Once again, these numbers are only speculative based on the article I linked.

Of course the true exposure rate won't be known. But everything suggests it's much higher than the 10% we do know for sure. Probably at least double that.

Tabs,

Ditto on losing the mask, but I have to admit it almost feels illegal to go out in public bare faced even now.

Fins,

With the testing protocol which was adopted at the beginning of the pandemic, test availability and reliability and the fact that the asymptomatic and mild cases would not have necessarily generated a test, both in first world countries and even more so in second world countries, a true exposure rate will never really be known. Right now in the US, it is sitting just above 10% as confirmed by testing compared to 1.88% for Mexico. Mexico's mortality rate is raging at 9.25% compared to the US's 1.78%. Looking at US case demographics which indicates Hispanic ethnicity is probably a bit more affected by the coronavirus, you would reasonably expect the Mexico case counts would be much higher than 1.88% of the Mexico Population.

Wondering, I caught something about Mexico started testing their citizens for antibodies and they have now estimated that 30% of their citizens have had covid, even though their confirmed tested cases is a number of roughly only 10% of their citizens.

If you look at the state just below us called SC they have been in school 5 days a week since last August and no problems. Georgia and Florida are also examples to look at and I almost forgot Texas. And McMasters is ending the extra federal unemployment money.
