Our county has a full time lawyer while Watauga and Wilkes have part time lawyers from the private bar.

Per a post on another social media site, the Post is now asking for accounts of UFO sightings, taking a page from Weekly World News.

I should be a journalist.
I can make spreadsheets and print them out. Of course without context they don't mean much.

aFicIoNadoS | Posted 10:55 pm, 04/24/2017 | At the very least, Jessie should have given some brief job description of the positions listed. With some of the job titles you don't know if they are some sort of social worker or a janitor
|
At the very least, Jessie should have learned the ethics of professionalism. Combing his hair and dressing not so much like a bum would be a BIG step in the right direction.

This article shows that no one was paying attention to Donna when she tried to explain the DSS budget to the commissioners. Essentially payroll makes up about 8% of the total DSS budget. and the county is responsible for around 8% of the DSS budget..
The total budget is approximately 62 million.

The paper boys just cant take any criticism period. They have not posted a story on this site in a long while. Yet they do post on another social media site. They receive the same criticism there they got here.
Fairplay while you are emailing the chief paper boy ask him why his boys are wussies from posting on this site.

What a waste of newsprint and web space. I am in the process of writing a VERY detailed letter to Ron Clausen, Publisher of The Jefferson Post. I am giving him a list of things the paper does NOT write about. Things that the people of Ashe would be looking for. Things that would increase his circulation. Maybe he can explain why certain people get handled with kid gloves. Or maybe he can say why some people, such as Roarks brother are not included in the arrest reports or court reports. Maybe he can read this article on DSS and explain how it educates or informs his readership. Anyone interested, his email is RClausen@Civitasmedia.com . Maybe he will wonder why a Charlotte TV station is interested in our Sheriff and how Roark got his county job but his local paper isn't.

We need to know comparisons to other counties that have similar conditions to ours, such as poverty, unemployment, rates of mental illness, drug abuse rates, elderly population, etc... Our county statistically has a huge rate of mental illness, addiction, suicide, and elderly folks, all of which make social services necessary. Other counties similar in population to ours may have not have the same demographics we do. Also, what is the performance in terms of error rates, untimely stuff turned into the state, hours overtime worked, etc... If a county similar to us has a DSS that is half the size of ours but their performance is also substantially lower, which DSS is in worse shape? The vast majority of those positions receive at least some reimbursement from the federal and state governments, and some of those positions generate millions of dollars into our local economy, and counties can be forced to pay those monies back due to poor performance or too many errors. As it stands, this article serves no journalistic purpose whatsoever. Just something else for people to gossip about with no real knowledge to back it up.

Put the numbers in context of something. There was zero relevance to the article to anything.
How about the percentage of salaries to the cost of services provided? Maybe the difference Ashe is above or below the States mean or median. Maybe compare us to similar counties of size and poverty rate.
Again, it's just crap in its current form.

Jessie needs to read what he writes before publishing it. He writes. "The department’s highest paid position belongs to the DSS Director, who makes $82,329. "
But his list has the DSS attorney at ?

Again, it's poor journalism. We have nothing to compare the numbers too. We are not told how many are these are federal or state mandates. We don't know anything. The numbers are easy to find.... Tell us if we are wasting money or not. I know the answer because I can look it up. The post is insinuating that this is similar to the wasted money like the lawsuits. They must be the laziest paper in the world. Cut and paste journalists.

I think all the salaries of counties were readily available on the unc school of government web site. The only news here is the number of employees in that department. Their budget is larger then other counties more then twice our population.
