Cutting back to once a week and charging to read online? Good luck with that business model.... doing less and charging more.

Well according to the Post website today they are going to combine into one paper and do only a once a week paper. Everything including the website will be subscription only so their only subscribers will be older people who don’t use the internet, business will be stupid to advertise with them because it will be a waste of good advertising money.

People you don’t need to subscribe to this junk rag, if you do what will you get? Week old news? You can get current new here or by gossip anywhere in the county!

Let’s see how long it lasts!

They should fail, after all who cares about some blue haired old lady's apple pie recipe, or how big of a buck cousin Billy Bob killed or what punk scored a touchdown on Friday night!!!

They're going to keep the pay site? wow. That will fail miserably.

They'll have trouble surviving more than three years if they continue with that paywall. There's already another site being built with advertisers lined up.

Horrible name really.

The Ashe Mountain Times would easily qualify. Even if it were to switch to a free publication, it would easily sell 100 subscriptions just to the attorneys in the various counties it serves. Almost every Hotel and Motel buys a few subscriptions for their guests.

(4) In the county where the newspaper is seeking qualification, any person who wishes to do so may subscribe to the newspaper.

(5) The newspaper must have regularly and continuously published for at least one day in each calendar week for at least 50 of the 52 consecutive weeks immediately preceding the date of the application.

The sworn affidavit shall be accompanied by a fee of five hundred dollars ($500.00). A newspaper may qualify in more than one county. A separate application, and application and renewal fee, shall be submitted for each county in which a newspaper seeks to qualify.

(d) Upon filing the sworn affidavit and paying filing fee required by subsection (c) of this section, the newspaper shall be qualified to publish in the county any of the items listed in subsection (a) of this section. a newspaper has to be a subscription paper in order to run legal ads. Those ads are very expensive. For instance, an ad for a foreclosure that runs 2 or 3 columns is about $1000 - $2000 each time it runs. They don't have to charge much for subscriptions or have a lot of subscribers, just enough so they can do the legal ads. The notice to creditors for dead people is also pretty expensive. So don't worry about how many people subscribe, they just need enough so they can run legal ads.

I don't know why anyone would buy a newspaper business, but ****, apparently someone thought it was a good idea. I haven't paid for a newspaper in 10 years at least.

I'm not surprised. I did not have you picked as a big reader. Honestly, I did not pick you as a reader at all.

No newspaper in Ashe is worthy of paying for, print or online...

Strictly business, but I'd say they'll combine to one paper and make people pay for the actual print and for their website. Why wouldn't they? No competition of a free paper and enough people will be dumb enough to pay for whatever "news" they provide.
