You said it yourself, the person came in 2 minutes BEFORE closing. You chose a customer service role as your job, so you need to provide customer service to them as aggravating as it can be sometimes. I don't know of many people who get to leave EXACTLY at quittin' time everyday. Even in an office environment, I occasionally have someone come in right before 5pm that I have to attend to.

Don't expect anyone on here to be understanding. Generally, a post on here only opens you up for attack. Without further comment, I understand your original point.

JB, are you suggesting that the doors should be locked 15 minutes before closing time so you get home on time? Maybe I've got a sick child at home and need to get them something to make them feel better and the only option I had was to rush out at the last minute. I can propose as many situations as you can. The posted hours of operation are just that. No if you want to run me out once the magic hour strikes then that will be my tough luck and a big black eye for your store, but you have that option I suppose, refuse to serve me because I was not ready to complete my transaction at the appointed closing time.

if the business owner expects to and doesn't mind paying you overtime, or if they make an announcement that the store is closing at a specific time, then as an employee you don't have an argument.
However, the store owner should look at the volume of sales after official closing time vs cost of staying open (salaries, utilities, etc) and determine if it is worth it to extend hours for those few.

How selfish can you be? Do you think you are the only job that requires you to work over? I can tell you that there are plenty of jobs that require a whole lot more than 30 to 45 minutes. Grow up and welcome to the real world.

Ok u are right . We all are just salespeople who are not important as u are so come whenever u feel like it.come in at one minute to closing shop look around kill time.some of us have sick spouses to get home to kids needing their parent so come on in and stay an hour after closing just looking around a have no consideration of others our hour are posted for a reason not just so u know to get in before the doo is locked. It means we 're closed we have had three shifts going and that is all the company allows. I am sorry we are not open teeny four hours just for u.think about someone besides yourself

JB, I"m sure that whoever came in lase night and ruined your closing did it just to aggravate you. In your mind what do opening and closing hours mean? Open at 8:00, so you show up at 8;05 and then take 30 minutes to primp and compose yourself before you unlock the door for the customers, and at the end of the day you're already breaking down the equipment an hour before the scheduled closing time so you can lock the door and bolt once the magical hour has arrived? A quality business has their staff on site and ready to work, all the registers loaded. equipment running and lights on at the appointed opening hour and then do not start the close down of the store until after the closing hour has arrived. I'm pretty sure you are being paid by the hour, what's the problem?

Sometimes folks find they need something and then realize time is close so they try to get there. Closing at midnight means you close at midnight. If they come in 2 minutes before it you should greet and wait on them the same as if they came at 6 pm.
