Hmm I suppose that is a valid point. They could of spent the money on paper, glue, pencils and other needed supplies.

I don't see a problem with the sign either, but mtns has a valid point. The schools are constantly hitting up parents to cover other costs, and send the students out to harass everyone they come in contact with to buy over priced wrapping paper and cookies, then spend money on things that aren't necessities. That's the biggest problem in all government agencies, not being more responsible with their budgets. Schools should at least be covering their own supplies and cleaning products before buying things not needed. The PTO should work this way as a lesson to teach kids financial responsibility

Sign doesn't really bother me.

They do many of those things you just talked about, they raised the money for the sign outside of the normal fundraising activities.

I wonder if your mother wished she'd done that too Jack. If she didn't, I bet every classmate, teacher, co-worker, and neighbor you've ever had wishes she had. Of course no one ever said anything, because unlike you, not everyone is a sarcastic jerk!

I spoke to a friend of mine today and she was ticked off about what was being said on this site about Blue Ridge Elemenatry Schools new digital sign and told me I had to get on here and read this. I've read it and I'm ticked off too, but in a very different way than my friend. Between me and my husband, from his previous marriage and our marriage, we have four children attending school in Ashe. Our youngest ones are still in elementary school and attend Blue Ridge, so I should be proud of the new sign right? I try not to be a vain person so pride is really not my thing. What I would have appreciated the PTSO do with this money is buy all those classroom supplies that are "suggested" each year. We sacrifice supplies at home and buy off brand foods during back to school month so we can support the schools by sending in Clorox wipes, sandwich bags, glue sticks, notebooks, colored pencils, etc., etc., etc. We easily spend over $150 not counting all the back to school supplies and clothing for all our children, and pay the fees that are required for our older students. I know you readers are thinking that we just shouldn't send them in, but my children are still learning to get over their pride and they want to feel like they contributed and helped out so we make the sacrifice. Another thing that could be done with the money is pay for a field trip for all the students just one time per year to allow everyone to attend and to give the parents a break. It seems like the field trips all come at once around a certain time, such as just before Christmas break, and we are sending in anywhere from $7-$20per child. This is a hard time with heating expenes and preparing to buy gifts for four children and other family members. Please don't judge me and accuse me of not going to the PTSO meetings because I do attend everything I can when mine and my husbands work schedules allow us to. One last thing, the PTSO could stop having these fundraisers altogether and do without the sign because it also puts a burden on us to support the fundraisers and buy tickets or stuff that we do not need. I am sorry if I offended anyone but there are two sides to every story and this is mine.

Fins they are like little slaves for companies selling that crap with the company getting most all of the money. I am guessing a gun give away is out ? How about a beach vacation?

I and other parents have actually discussed that before. It would suit me fine to just send them money instead of having something we don't need.

If y'all had any idea of how little money the schools get from selling crap like cookie dough and magazines, you wouldriot and put a stop to that crap. It would be better if half the parents just sent $20 to school.

Also, if the money came from the BRE PTA so what if she signed the check? The money belongs to that school not the other schools. I would be upset myself if all the money I and others that have poured out in fund raisers didn't go to my child's school.

Westwood doesn't do BBQs. The only fund raiser they do are cookie sales, magazines twice a year, spirit wear, and the Fall Festival. I know because I have child there.

jack, call your hot teachers and know that the signs are not coming to all schools. never mentioned at the other schools. I am sure the PTA bought the sign, but the other schools are not on the list. How does heels09 know everything so quickly? I don't know who you are, but you know a lot to not know a lot

Yes, Grubb was there before Yates, but Yates still signed all the checks. Other schools do not have a sign and their PTAs do things much like the BBQ dinner. Blue Ridge is not the only one doing fundraisers.

Watauga still has 7 elementary schools, and all of them have long pickup lines. At the one in Boone they have to have a cop direct traffic and the line wraps out into the road and around that side street that runs behind new market center.

Y'all are worried about some stupid sign at BRES? How about the fact that it's the worst performing elementary school in the county, and maybe one of the worst in the state? Teachers and the school system aren't to blame either. You got a bunch of impoverished kids in that part of the county who breed with reckless abandon, then expect others to raise their barnyard anima, er, kids. Might as well be living in south Charlotte.

There is more than consolidation that caused the increased traffic. It is a factor, but especially in the elementary schools we could no longer keep up these tiny schools. Different discussion for a different day.

That's true of all the elementary schools. I'm amazed by how many parents pick up their kids. My parents never picked me up. We had to ride the bus. I'm not so sure this consolidation of schools was a good thing. I look at the long lines and disruption of traffic that when I was a kid was nonexistent as parents largely had kids ride the buses. I hated the bus though and I did walk more than once to school, and then drove once I got a license. ( I lived relatively close to school from 7th grade til 12th grade).
