I would much rather train and arm some teachers in each school like is already in place in some schools.

The gun safety course is a strong idea, unless and until you get a handle on the mental and behavioral health issues in the school age population I'd be opposed to removing the gun free zone surrounding the school facilities. The Parkland event was a tragedy, the Florida legislature went crazy imposed additional restrictions on the purchase of legal firearms in the state. They also diverted general healthcare funds into mental and behavioral health programs in the schools without an identified mechanism to implement the use of the funds, thus the largely remain unspent and most likely will not be renewed in this years budget. One thing the Florida legislature did do was allow the County Sheriffs to work with the local schools to train and arm school personnel in "guardian" roles. The guardians received 120 hours of initial training on how to respond in active shooter situations with annual training updates and re-certification. and are required to conceal carry at work. Schools are allowed to have as many guardians as they wish. These are volunteer duties assumed by school personnel and do not carry a stipend or additional pay.

I don't think we need them, they are a feel good thing to make it look like they are safe. I mean that SRO in Florida just sat outside while all those people got shot.

However we need to end gun free zones, let hunters (teachers and students) carry guns etc to school as they did in my day. In fact I wouldn't be opposed to having all students take a gun safety course. You fear a lot less things you understand. (Marksman classes wouldn't be bad either, but been a long time since we had a school shooting team).

Yep, I’ve told you before, the whole SRO thing is a waste of money. This article just confirms it. We are paying them to tie shoes and wipe snotty noses. Unbelievable...
