I’ll have to confess, I didn’t know about this thread except for following the thread of the same name started by the same poster on go-Wilkes, i am curious and have a question, what exactly does workplace injury and fatality statistics have to do with the sheriff’s dept. doing traffic checkpoints?

Try SCUBA equipment and diving to 100 feet.

****, I HAVE donned SCBA and entered an unfamiliar burning building. That doesn't even make the top ten list of scary things I've done/encountered.

Facts are facts. Try omitting the drama associated with your reply.

****, if you want a real thrill, next time there is a storm, jump in a bucket truck and try reconnecting the power lines in the down pouring rain while lightning flashes all around you.

Operating a hose is tough. Operating it in a raincoat is near impossible.

I dont get my thrills strapping on a air tank, or wearing a gun on my side shadow. I would be thrilled to entertain some hot hose jockey wives though all the while sipping on the cops liquor stash.

Tell you what dimwits, strap on a SCBA and go in a burning building, one you have never been in. Then tell us what you think

Cliven, what is posted here that is inappropriate, or demonstrates a bias against law enforcement? Facts are not inappropriate. They are just facts.

This has nothing to do with the anecdotal incident that happened last night. It’s more related to the checkpoints. People need to be educated on the truth of workplace dangerous.

The loss of life is tragic regardless the occupation. But the myth of firemen and police having a more dangerous job than everyday workers/laborers should be revealed.

The timing on this is highly inappropriate. You cop haters are the scum of the earth. A young Mooresville officer was killed last night by a coward POS who thankfully took his own life. Before you local, know-it-all, internet "tough guys" decide to post something so inappropriate, maybe it would be a good idea to glance at the news first....That is if you can read. I have my doubts...

In addition, Police, Firefighters, EMTs, Parole and Probation Agents, Prison Guards, Jailers and many others engaged in law enforcement or emergency response, receive benefits under the Federal LODD Death benefit program. Currently $318,111.64. That is in addition to any death benefits from State and local government insurance programs. Also, if an active member of the NRA, there is a $25,000 death benefit. The children are eligible for Social Security Survivor benefits, numerous scholarship programs, and in many states, health insurance through the parent employers health plan until age 21. Then of course, there is their own privately purchased life insurance, and FOP benefits. All of this, as death benefits, is tax free. So, definitely not the most dangerous job, but the most highly compensated death benefits.

Maybe it's not one of the most dangerous jobs but I doubt the family of the Mooresville officer who was shot and killed last night will find much comfort in those statistics.

Think again. With some of the recent events going on, I think it’s a good time to remind everyone what careers really deserve our gratitude for their willingness to put their lives on the line
