I read the article on the fire department meeting in Todd and I see that one of burfurts boys is involved in that mess. Mr Matt Royal a sergeant at the Sheriff`s office is named in the article for receiving money from Chief Welch on behalf of the department. He is also Welch’s son in law. Funny how some people are in crooked environments all over the county. Mr. Royal is one of the highly trained sergeants at Sheriff`s office. He graduated basic law enforcement and burfurt made him a sergeant in under 2 months.

That board had to know the bills weren't being paid. They got a wake up call from the former Yadkin bank when foreclosure was filed against the fire club. They are just as deep in this scam as Welch.

I think the board probably also has poor legal representation and has been given bad or no advice at all. Any half qualified attorney should have told them just what you said

Immediately after Welch resigned as Chief, the Board of Directors should have demanded the immediate return of all department property in his possession and given him a written no trespassing letter. I am more convinced now than ever, that the main problem is a weak Board of Directors. That and a Board that does not understand their legal obligations to the corporation and the people it serves. If the IRS jumps on them, they will find out very quickly how responsible they are for the operation of the organisation. The VFD, and each member of the board will be held liable for any taxes that should have been withheld.

The 20+ thousand was to help him start a business and came out of the departments tax money. The 7100.00 came out of the firemans relief fund and was deposited directly into welch account. This is against the law. The papers have put it all together at 30+ thousand he has from the department.

It can be used to help a member avoid destitution based on the rewrite in 2014 of G.S. 58-84-35. However it is not legal to not disclose what the money was spent on. Severe misuse of funds giving himself a loan and then possibly bailing himself out though.

I had the same thought about him running for sheriff. The 7100 that the fire club deposited in Welches checking account came from the Firemans relief fund. This is against the law to take money out of that fund for the undisclosed purpose. Its still hard for me to believe that no investigation is being done.

The chief of Todd VFD finally stepped down. A criminal investigation on the financial dealings (especially regarding the "loan" of taxpayer money to the chief should be investigated.

Just a reminder......this clown once ran for sheriff. Heck, he would probably be better than what we have now.
