I'm grateful for AMH. So, Billy do you have a private jet to get you there in an emergency? ity is in the air.

I usually travel to Atlanta for medical emergencies.

billy, make sure you don't use AMH if you think it is so bad. Don't use a physician they recruited into the community for your care, make sure when you have an accident or collapse with a stroke or heart attach that you travel to Wilkes or Watauga.

'I honestly don’t think we need AMH. We’d better off without it.'

Ask the folks in nearby Patrick County, Virginia how they feel about the closure their only 'local' hospital in the town of Stuart. No, we would not be better off without it.

Even in large metropolitan areas, patients are transferred to different hospitals for specialized care. In Washington DC, it is not uncommon to be transferred from one great hospital to another. Medstar Washington Hospital Center, (MWHC) is a level one trauma center that is also acknowledged to be the leader in cardiac care in the entire area. If you need a cardiac electrophysiologist, you should hope they transfer you to MWHC. Why? The doctor that invented the procedure and developed all the necessary tools is there. If you have kidney or urology problems, or need emergency brain surgery, or are expecting a difficult child birth, you want to be at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital. (MGUH). Need a pancreas transplant? MGUH is the ONLY hospital in the world that has a 100% survival rate since the procedure was first started. Why? They are a University Hospital with a large endowment for medical research. If you are getting your transplant at MGUH they admit you to the hospital a week ahead of time. When they take you to the OR, your body is in the best shape possible for the procedure. And then they are keeping you for five days after. Everybody else admits you the day before, and releases you two days later. When you ask if your insurance will pay for all of this, the answer is no, but they don't care. If you have a problem that no one can figure out, they will bundle you up and ship you to George Washington University Hospital.(GW) That is where Reagan was taken after being shot by Hinckley. They are known for diagnostics. They will run lab tests that most hospitals have never heard of, and your insurance will definitely not pay for. And like MGUH, GW doesn't care. Then they will try to create a care plan, that they don't care if your insurance pays for or not.

So yes, we need to keep AMH up and running with the ability to provide the best basic care possible. When they tell someone that they are being transferred somewhere for better care, the patient should be happy they are not being treated by someone whose ego allows them to take a risk with their life, and try a procedure they are not expert at.

AMH treats a great deal of illness and injury, with that being said they are a primary care facility, not a secondary facility like Boone or a tertiary facility like Baptist. If you have a stroke, significant heart attack, and a number of other things you need to recieve treatment in a facility that has the experience and expertise to take care of you. AMH and WMC both have great physicians available, they just cannot take care of everything. Both facilities want to keep as much care local as possible.

Like Creston said generally lights off means it is just a routine transport to either Forsyth or Baptist. Lights on means it is an emergency transport to one of those places.
