that’s a cute fantasy world you have. Keep ignoring that with the attention sports get it makes kids think there is no reason to read. It’s why so many kids set their goals at working at Walmart or if they are really motivated, work on cars in their back yard.

Kids in the youth league are fun to watch and they really seem to enjoy the game......before they get into high school and are under so much pressure to win. And like Jack said they do get good exercise, a healthy mind also needs a healthy body. If their pictures and names are in the paper it gives them something to feel proud about. If it weren't for the youth leagues the kids would be far less prepared for sports at the next level. Although it is almost impossible to think a kid from Ashe will ever play pro ball, if they enjoy the game and keep their grades up also, sports are good all through school. With the obesity rate we have in the US, I can't understand why physical education isn't mandatory in school.

Well at least they are getting the kids some exercise, most are sitting at home becoming severely over weight in front of a computer or a game.

You are way too concerned about a children’s game. Those kids would be much better off if you put this much excitement into reading. What reading level are they at? How do they compare to wilkes? Basketball won’t get them a job.

The age group I was talking about was 6th grade team. When these kids get to middle school their skill level is behind the other area teams like Wilkes. It use to be the opposite. Of course below 6th grade shouldn’t be throwing up 3’s. That is why the 7th grade middle school team is doing well now is because they played travel and had to play full court press,zone and could shot 3’s in 6th grade.

Maybe one day goashe will give out participation trophy's so all you hilbilly's can feel special...

They did recently run a dead deer pic. In the online edition the headline originally read, “Dead deer.” It was changed shortly after. Are there any psychotic parents at local rec league games? Those really have generated into the cesspools of humanity. That would be newsworthy imo, and generate web hits, more so than what goes on on the field/court. Just record parents screaming and at each other’s throats.

I think the no 3s and no zone rules are about kids learning basics and not trying to showboat. Depending on the age group, this makes sense. It also keeps the dad coaches that failed at high school ball from screwing up the kids trying to teach them zones and doing it wrong.

The only sports that get covered are those that happen at school. If you want to those sports outside of school published you have to send it in to the paper.

Why don’t they allow 3s or zone? It’s kind of like teaching a kid Canadian football rules then encouraging them to try out for JV or Varsity in the American system. Plus, the NBA is basically a 3 point league now. That’s really all it’s become. I’m honestly curious as a huge fan of the game.

I’m not trying to offend, but rather give you a dose of reality, that’s all. I recently won my Fantasy Football pool. It wasn’t even close. I’m still waiting for a reporter to contact me and write 7,000 words on my glorious achievement. High school and college sports in a newspaper? Yes, makes sense? Rec league? Just takes up space and sells a handful of rack copies.

Billy is right. If anyone besides the parents of kids in the game are showing up to watch, you better have the authorities check them to see if they are on a registered list. Even most parents don’t want to watch.

I’ve lived a lot of places, subscribed to and read a lot of papers, and I’ve never seen a paper publish stories about rec leagues. No one cares about that. You’re playing a watered down version of the sport too. I hope everyone received a participation trophy.

What did you do to promote the games? Did you write an article and submit it to the paper for publication? I was involved in youth soccer when my kids were young and we knew if you wanted your games etc covered in the local press you needed to reach out to them to be sure they had material and articles if needed. This is the first I've heard of these games on this site. Now that it is over all you want to do is come on here and complain.

I know baseball and football reign supreme here in Ashe County. But this weekend the rec league youth basketball had its championship games with no coverage. Now I know it’s daddy ball and you have to go off the mountain to learn basketball, but the boys game was a nailbiter. Even though they don’t count 3pointers or allow zone or stop the game clock when they are suppose to it was a fun game to watch. Congrats to the Boys and Girls Hornets teams. The boys went undefeated this season. Hats off to their Coach who played them like a team and not a one or two man show.
