I don't know which case was first joseph, but the one I knew about was the failed inspection for a brake light being out. To this day the sheet you are given only says "brake light".

Here is the case

Heien v. North Carolina

Dog in this case it was from a man who got pulled due to a brake light being out and had his car searched and was convicted on drug charges. In this case the NC court of appeals ruled that the law only requires one brake lamp and that the stop was objectively unreasonable, and the stop violated Defendant's Fourth Amendment rights and Reversed and vacated his conviction.

The NC supreme then reversed that ruling and upheld held the drug conviction and that was appeal to the US supreme court which upheld the state supreme court

However until the statute is changed you are only required to have one working brake light.

Didn't the brake light thing start with the annual inspection of a womans car and it was failed because she had a brake light out and the inspection sheet that is in your glove compartment right now says brake light and not lights and that is what she won her suit on. In other words the ignorance of the state of nc dmv.
