Some people will always resist change, facts of life. I 73-74 to north myrtle beach has been a tremendous time saver. Used to be a 7 hour drive.Modern 4 lane divided hiway now 4 hours. Change is good. Try living without electric or running water.

Basking - I have come to the conclusion that it's a function of age and the type of cars and roads they grew up with back in the 40's, 50's, 60's, etc. The roads here were primitive until the 70's. Even today there are a ton of gravel/dirt roads that require you to know the temperature in order to navigate the road. When you have to time your trip to beat the sun going down, otherwise you can't get over a hill, that's primitive.

The creepers I see are almost always old, and during their formative driving years, you could not practically drive faster than 45, even on a black top. That's what they get used to and they may even retain the muscle memory associated with cars that did not have power steering or power breaks.

The other set of creepers on 221 seem to be folks carrying loose equipment in the back of a flat bed. 4 lanes will cure both problems, except for those that are so old they really can't navigate a four lane road.

If there is no traffic, how come every time I go to or from Boone, I get stuck behind some moron that wants to drive 45? And there's always too much on coming traffic to take advantage of the limited passing zones. I want 6 f***ing lanes so I don't get hung up behind some jerk off riding next to a car in the right lane.

Heels, there is always a segment of the population that makes a profit off the status quo and retarding economic progress.

To give an example, look at a slum lord - they profit off people that can not afford decent housing and the slum lord faces little to no housing stock competition for the Class B or C mobile home that he rents for $300 a month.

People who sell crap don't want to compete against people selling something of value. A captured, spatially entrapped clientele allows for the greatest net profits.

People of Ashe County amaze me. They would rather sit around and complain about how Ashe doesn't have this, or how hard they have it. Yet, when something comes along that has the potential to help, they are against it. I guess they would rather sit and complain about being poor and how large the DSS budget is than to support infrastructure that has potential to help those things.

Sure the roadway needed improvement, but not to the extent they are going. A wider two lane such as Hwy. 16 south from Sheet's Bridge to the 163 intersection would have been plenty. There is no industry ever coming back to Ashe, and as for the commuter traffic. What they are doing is overkill and nothing more than tossing money down the drain on the Highway to Nowhere!!

Sounds like a highway to nowhere to me.

4 lanes to US 421 is needed to give Ashe County residents a chance to get to decent employment without driving one hour, one way. That employment is going to go to Boone or the Wilkesboro's. Ashe missed it's chances in the past decades and put too much emphasis on the connections to Alleghany County rather than accepting the future is in Boone.

Ashe's future is that of a bedroom community for Boone. That's not a fantastic future, but it's a **** site better than what Grayson and Washington County have to look forward to in their futures.

The key now is to make South and Western Ashe fully palatable to folks relocating to ASU for work and for natives to easily commute to jobs in Wilkes.

I used to work with NCDOT on highway plans in the distant past. Highway engineers are **** odd bunch, they like speed and travel time more than they like safety. However, without a doubt a two lane road such as the crap between the New River Bridge and the Garbage Dump is **** dangerous. The saving grace here is that so many older people drive 10-15 mph below the speed limit. That speed reduction tends to limit the number and severity of accidents on that section of highway, but there seems to be a least two fatalities in that section every year.

When there is no where to go off the road, that makes it tough to avoid some accidents.

Sorry Rankle, I disproved your empty claims already by providing an example. Speed doesn't kill. Curves and on coming traffic kills. Now move on to arm pit farting sounds so you'll be talking about something you know about

Crap for brains why dont you look at the plans instead of just agitating and quarreling. Some of you same folks are the very ones that said blood would be in the streets of WJ when the stop lights were removed. Never happened. Moves traffic through town faster now.

The good thing is its being built and theres nothing anyone can do to stop it. Complain all you want, the fact is there are very few negatives. If you don't like it move, or take 194 to Boone.

Idiots... they are not building an autobahn. They are building a four lane with numerous ways to get on and off and probably stop lights here and there. The opportunity will be there to go very fast if you want. That opportunity is not always there the way the road is now. Chances are you will be behind traffic going a reasonable speed. And, I don't recall many bad accidents on this road over the years, whereas there have been several fatalities on 421.

Speed kills and you two are lucky that stupid doesn't.

Normally on July 31 of each year the Autobahn is heavily flooded with hiway traffic.Europeans Vacation time,I have read about as many as 200 traffic accidents on that single day. I have witnessed around a dozen traveling on the Autobahn on July 31. I hope hiway 221 is not screwed up like hiway 421 in Wilkes business area.

Moron were you to bother to educate yourself you would know that rural 2 lane roads are the most dangerous.
Rumpie, are you a drunk?

Basking

Really? Tell that to the Germans. While they do have accidents on the autobahn, they are few and far between. I would hate for you to be informed before opening your mouth

Any fool knows that highway safety decreases with higher speeds.

Well, almost any fool.

Basking

Posted 4:22 pm, 08/23/2015

And rankle, what professional data have you based your theory on that the highway will not be safer?

It must be all funded now. The state is buying property, It will all be completed by 2021

There was an article in the paper (MTN times) I think that said they had the money to buy all the right away but miss the dead line for funding on the one section and they didn't know when they would get it.
