Hahaha! Very good point concerning the workers, FINS. I just wonder how many of these clods had to Google what Mensa is?

I would rather have the human interaction. Computers are great but simple stuff can sometimes throw them off. Well I have had my problems with people not knowing the appropriate code to put in for produce. Anyway, I do hate that a person or 12 has lost their jobs due to the self checkout lanes.

Jr, you obviously didn't read the article that you tried to quote. Visa and MasterCard require banks to immediately refund charges if you claim fraud. You don't have to prove anything. They refund, then investigate. Essentially the same was as with a credit card. Paper checks don't have that protection.

As for someone stealing your information when you use a card, well, stop believing everything someone sends you in emails. Your information will be stolen from servers somewhere out on the cloud, not because you entered a a PIN number. You are paranoid and misinformed. Especially on your ideas on the paper dollar

So in essence scott you intend to remain in the 1950's and depend on cash and checks. Good thing you live in Ashe county and not the flat lands. I can be in and out of the liquor store in the time it takes you to hold up the gas pump.

You might eventually beat paying fraudulent charges but as that article someone linked stated the damage from a stolen debit card is far greater and immediate than a stolen credit card. I don't suggest using yours. Everytime you type in your PIN number someone could be stealing it. They do it all the time, particularly in larger cities, and they don't have to be in line behind you or even within 10 feet anymore. Remember though you have to be able to prove you didn't make the charges and if they use your PIN number that's a lot harder to do. Checks are protected as well, it's called forgery if you sign someone else check but again it can take time to recover any fraud.

Your money is already worthless has been for decades. It's not been backed by anything since 1972. Fiat money always fails, and when it does finally fail your credit cards etc won't be worth anything either. My guess is the US Dollar will collapse in late 2020s or the 2030s at present pace. We simply don't have the trillions necessary to pay out the promised benefits to the baby boomers. When the country talks debt they talk about the 19.3 trillion dollar debt, it fails to take into account the 103 trillion in additional unfunded mandates such as Social Security and Medicare where the government spent the money they paid on it on other things (since the LBJ administration). Clinton while he was President raided the gold reserve of Fort Knox (it doesn't hold any US Gold anymore and hasn't since Bill was President.....it still holds valuables generally for other countries). Our current debt plus unfunded liabilities exceeds the total national assets (including personal, religious, corporate and government assets).

I prefer dealing with cash myself. One tends to spend less when one uses cash. One spends more typically when one uses cards. That's why they make such a big push for folks to use them, they want you to overspend so that they can get more money out of you. The banks and credit card companies are not your friend, they are in it to make money. They make the most money when you overdraw and they get to charge you extra fees.

Some people just can't be pleased. If you don't like the self check-outs, guess what? You don't have to use them. They are voluntary. Feel free to go stand in line at a regular check-out.

Yogi, I do a fair share of traveling, much of it for work. And my travels take me into a large variety of businesses across a variety of locations. Please, tell me one place where a big retailer or local convienent stores have cashiers that you would actually want to interact with or offer a semi skilled job to? I've seen very little difference in the wall mart employees at every other store I've been in than the ones at the Ashe county store. None of them are receiving Mensa invitations.

A company sure couldn't go by the laws and regulations on the books at the time to make the necessary plans to be here. It seems those regulations are a moving target.

One look at the mouth breathers of this county by a company should do it also AB. Not to mention the county has been sued left and right. How many suits are pending now?

It amazes me how low performing the wage workers are here in Ashe County. I'm guessing that GE and AEV got all the motivated people to work in their production lines. With that being the case, I will avoid an interaction with one of these people whenever possible. Most of the time, the checkout clerks are whining about how hard their working or how the company is screwing them over and blaming their plight on the boss and his chosen one or two. The rest of them are out in front of the businesses taking long drags on their Winston. Other than low tax expectations, I couldn't see how this area would be attractive to any company that would actually want to turn a profit with the local workforce manufacturing their products.

Jimmy you must be another not using a debit card. One day cash will be useless. Stores already refuse to take 100 or 50 dollar bills and look at 20's like you are a counterfeiter. When they get through loving on it and marking on it and finally take it i always tell them that one just came off the press.

Be sure to count your change at the Walmart self-checkouts if you use cash. The machine tried to cheat me out of $5.00 a couple of weeks. The employee watching over the self-checkouts said that particular machine had short changed some other people. They've probably had it fixed since then, but best to pay attention and make sure the machine gives you back correct change. Other than that, I like the new machines. They're a lot faster to use when you only have a couple of items.

Scotty, you need to do fact checking before you post your "fun tips". Dog is correct about the debit card. Fun tip: Scotty is wrong concerning the debit card.

Another option, if you don't trust modern technology, use a credit card. Make the entries in your check registry and then pay it off every month. Don't be the *** hole holding up the line. You are one of the reasons the rest of us like self checkout.

Scott someone has told you some bs buddy. You are liable for those checks if they get written all over but not a debit or credit card. They are backed by either visa or mastercard. I bet people love you at the gas station. Go today and get you a debit card and while you are there sign up for online banking.

Do you know a lot of people that have had their debit card stolen and used?

jrscott295

Fun tip, if someone steals your debit card and uses it, you are liable for whatever they spend unlike a credit card.

So I don't carry mine with me, except on long trips when I might need to access extra money.
