I consider Eldreth a good pick for Chief Deputy. He is already serving as the Captain of the Ashe County Sheriff's department and provides the youth some say they are looking for. He is also a very nice guy with a professional manner about him.

Well considering it's down to two candidates... I'd have to go with Howell, Absher has never impressed me..

Countyroad194... I think Chris Eldreth AKA Popcorn will be Buckys chief deputy.

Timmy's first choice was bufurt, his second choice was the moochen.

Howell is clearly the better choice for the job...

10 years is not a long time. Vote for someone with a mortgage payment.

As I understand it, he would have to serve as Sherriff for 10 years to secure that prime Sherriff Retirement Package. So he would need to be elected 3 times.

Just how long do you think someone with over 30 years of experience will continue to stay on the job? How much more time does he need to secure that state retirement like Williams?

We could also discuss that the world is vastly different from 30 years ago and question if someone of Absher’s age can fully understand it.

It is always good to see the posters here put the needs of the citizens of Ashe first. I think a candidate with over 30 years experience in our SO would be the best choice......but we are all entitled to our opinion and our one vote to back it up. That's why we have elections......picking the best person for the job.

Bucky is already on an ego trip. He has been for years. While it’s not vindictive like Bufurt’s, it is there. His mistakes aren’t way back when he was a rookie. Over the years he’s shown to regularly not be helpful to citizens if it would require him to put forth an effort. On top of that, his age is a concern because he is highly likely to retire midterm like Williams and leave the county in another Bufurt style mess.

That said, if Bucky wins, he will probably be an ok sheriff, while he stays in the job. But he’s not the best choice. Plus, Howell has a hot wife.

Who has Howell picked as his chief deputy?

Some of you are saying you have reservations about Bucky because of his age. That's my biggest concern with Howell. Absher has served in the number two spot at the Sheriff's office long enough that I don't think we have to worry about him going on an ego trip like Buchanan did. I'm not so sure about Howell, I hope not, but sometimes a little power goes to a person's head, especially with one so young. Not that I don't like Phil, I do, I just prefer Absher.

There may be things that can be told about Bucky "back in the day"; we all make mistakes in life and hopefully learn from them. I know I can't believe some of the things I did in my youth.I also voted for Trump and Lord knows he has many skeletons in his closet, but as long as the economy is good and he keeps his finger off the red button, I'm okay with him. Ashe County voters will make the decision between Howell and Absher in Nov. and I will support which ever one wins (until he gives me a reason not to). As for changes taking place at the SO after the election, some changes will be made no matter who wins. Howell has already chosen someone from outside the office to be Chief Deputy if elected, instead of promoting from within.

I do think this contest will be closer than the Williams--Winters race was.

I'm not a Democrat by the way. In fact other than Roten in the unopposed ROD, Absher will probably be the only Democrat I will be voting for.

The independents consist of a lot of democrats that have left the party of idiots.

Independents are the fastest growing group. But they still aren’t the largest number
