They actually bought property in the northern end of the county and in Alleghany county. After it was stopped they sold or tried to sell people their farms and land back at 5 times what they paid.

Aw Shucks | Posted 9:02 pm, 10/04/2016 | Donna Weaver was a 30+ year county employee who worked her way up to eventually serve as director of DSS for over 20 years. She guided DSS through the myriad of constantly changing federal and state mandated programs and provided a top notch service to the citizens. She is intelligent, professional, ethical and understands county operations as well as the needs of the citizens. Larry Rhodes has served as an Ashe County commissioner for 18 years. Prior to that he was plant manger at Hanes/Sara Lee before the company left Ashe County. He is insightful, knowledgeable, and bases each decision he makes on what he believes is in the best interest of the citizens. He is also a veteran.
Richard Blackburn retired from the Ashe County school system where he served as an educator and a principal. He is also a former commissioner. He is intelligent, fair, supports education and economic development in particular.
Polly Jones retired from the Ashe County school system where she served as an educator for over 30 years. She was known as a teacher who had high expectations of her students and held them to standards she knew they were capable of achieving. She was one of several local residents who traveled to Washington DC to address Congress in the successful fight to keep the TVA from building a dam that would have covered much of Ashe County.
The four candidates above are all college educated capable individuals who care deeply about Ashe County and its citizens.
The other two candidates are not worth mentioning.

Just when was the TVA trying to build a dam in Ashe?

And its for sure being a school teacher hasn't qualified her as experienced. I would hope and also think that each person elected would ask questions about spending tax payers money. Its for sure the current one is being let by puppet masters.

Working as a manufacturing supervisor is not business or financial experience. I haven't seen anything on Polly to suggest she is competent at running government. The only pro for her I've found anywhere is at least she isn't one of the current mouth breathers, and probably can't do any worse.

Polly Jones had many years in the private sector before even beginning her teaching career. She does know business from a manufacturing supervisor's viewpoint. She's got a strong personality and asks questions. I can't remember who listed it earlier, but it would be without a doubt, she would thoroughly examine the details before casting her vote. The positive qualifications of leadership and stewardship owned by Donna Weaver and Richard Blackburn are without question to anyone that knows them. If Ashe County voters have any sense at all, at least two of these three will be elected, with a third possibly being the re-election of Larry Rhodes, but I wouldn't be surprised if all three of the new comers will be elected.

That says nothing about Polly's knowledge or comprehension of how government actually works. I've met very few teachers that didn't think money grows on trees and that the politicians were just being greedy with it and not passing it along to their classroom.

You have not given a single reason to vote for her other then you like her. At this point I really dont think one party or the other really matters either.

I cant' recommend Polly Jones highly enough. I am a former student of hers and have nothing but positive things to say about her. I have spoken with her about her plans if elected and she seems to come to the table with no pre-conceived notions, Just a desire to help out her county. I'm a devout conservative, and am still very happy to trust Mrs. Jones, a Democrat, with the county's future. Super lady, and I imagine she will NEVER sign a bill without reading it, considering it from multiple angles, correcting the grammar, and then deciding how to vote. No passing it to find out what's in it with Polly!

Thanks Aw Shucks. I indeed had Donna Weaver mixed up with the Poe lady. Thank you for your candidate overview and for keeping every comment respectable.

No, it's more like this election is about picking the least bad at every level from the executive down to dog catcher.

I've never found a teacher that has the financial or business aptitude to run government.

IMO whether the board is Democratic or Republican lead, business concerning the airport will be handled just as it always has been. Same goes for the parks and Family Central.

Timmy I dont think the county would just "drop" the airport. What I would hope would happen is a board takes seat and uses common sense and business sense and not what a few rich airplane owners tell them and they lease that landing strip and stop putting 1-2 million a year in it. I would also hope they would consider the same for the parks and family central. I think I understood that with 6 employees they dont even mow the grass they contract the mowing.
Trailer trash you were mis-informed about Donna Weaver. If you want the true skinny on the candidates stay tuned.

I recently moved here and have no idea who to vote for locally. I'm good on state and national candidates but this is not the easiest place to get info on local elections. I don't want to not vote locally or vote for the wrong people. Just looking for educated reasons to cast my vote. For instance I thought Donna Weaver was the party responsible for messing up the Social Services Dept. Seems she overreached a bit. Do I have my wires crossed? Who were the ones that wasted money on In God We Trust mess? Just asking.

I didn't say I thought we needed to keep it. I posed the question to you if you seriously ever thought it would be dropped. Whether its needed or not, they will continue pumping money into it in my opinion.
