It seems this entire country is set on cruise control. I think that our County Mouth Breathers are re-elected all the time because the majority of the voters are Mouth Breathers too. Get jealous and inquisitive because someone might be making some money but as you note there isn't a lot of interest in the airport money pit. And incidentally, the County could in no way shape or fashion start to provide ambulance service cheaper than what is done now. maybe another private provider could underbid it. But the County could not do it. Ambulance service has become far more than a fast ride to the hospital. There are large national corporations that provide the service by contract too. Want to see what we have get degraded fast? One of those will do it in a flash.

We can get this much discussion about 750,000 because you think someone is making some money but you wont say a word about the 2.7 million going to an airport, and 10 million going to dss and county bums. Simply amazing.
Remember the ambulance is over seen by state laws and a medical director that lets them operate under his malpractice insurance and they have to carry insurance and I am sure no one will tell you how much but if I were a betting dog I would say in the neighborhood of 5 million.

All I can say is when my Dad had to have emergency transport to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, the ambulance service crew was great. I've had no bad experiences with them, nor heard any bad reports.

Currently, Robert Poe and Larry Dollar own Blue Ridge Medical Transport. Before them it was Jerry Ashley before him it was Lyalls, i think. The current Contract amount pays Blue Ridge Medical $750,000.00 and this is the last full year of that Contract its scheduled to be rebid or renewed June 2014. They also get to bill and collect what ever the current rates are and i can assure you they do that. Robert is the director of Blue Ridge Medical Transport and obviously is making money or he wouldn't continue to pursue and recieve the bid. To the best of my knowledge the County has never operated the service it has always been done by contracting it out. By all accounts the quality of the service has dropped significantly when Poe and Dollar took over. I personally would like to see some changes in the way Blue Ridge Medical operates or possibly see a change in providers completly. The public should talk to someone who has used the service recently and get their thoughts. If change is to occur the only way to make that happen is for you to contact your County Commisioners and discuss it with them.
Rick Ashley was the one who started AEV (The Place that builds ambulances, and yes he is Jerry's Brother).

Really? Do you have any idea what it costs to operate an ambulance service? If not then you have no idea if their revenue is good or not.

Most services only have a 70% collection rate or worse. By the time the bills are paid they aren't making that much money. If they were every county in the state would get rid of their ambulance service.

It is my understanding that the ambulance service ran about 2500 calls last year. What I don't know is the average cost per call was.But at an average of 500.00 per call it seems they are making decent positive revenue with the subsidies.I wish I could get more info. This is something that needs to be looked into further.

The county gave blue ridge 750 grand last year so I dont know if the op knows they are going to ask for million this year. There would be no way for the county to come out by taking over the ambulance service. Its called a service for a reason, when counties own them they do not pay their way. Same as letting someone else bid they would have to start from scratch unless they already own a service some place else.

I doubt the County will explore all the options. Just look at the School Sniper Prevention Program.

To the OP: maybe it's time for the county to look at all their options again. There may be somebody out there who will do it for less. My understanding is, the bid process helps keep prices down for the citizens. Just a thought.

The OP said its a million dollars a year. Is it a million or 750? I doubt either covers their expenses. I wouldn't be surprised if their insurance doesn't eat a big chunk of that.

Considering the county subsidizes the ambulane service 750,000 per year I would think that would cover any costs they would have. Also it almost impossible for anyone else to bid on the service.Considering the present owners of the service help establish the protocol for the bidding. Its the good ole boy way of doing things. So the county taking it over wouldnt be much difference.

I can't remember which Ashley it was. They built ambulances after they lost the county contract - then sold out to AEV
