I was under the impression it was under the county before ashely had it from talking to employees but that was 25 years ago.

Did the funeral home service drive a little slower in hopes of getting to double dip on the ride?

Sorry - I can trace the ambulance service from the time the funeral homes both ran it and it was never run by the county.

Joe, remember also that utilities are considered natural monopolies. And by that classification all rules around them are a little different too. Some of that changed a few years ago when congress opened up more competition for utilities. An example of this is how skyline suddenly started expanding TV and Internet service into other territories.

Giving a little history lesson on the ambulance service. Back in 1986 the fair labor standard act was passed that defined fire fighters and law enforcement, ems was never defined and several lawsuits arose and to this day still has not been defined. The boys in ashe formed a union and made demands on the county about their pay. The county said to heck with them and sold the service.

Because they brought electricity to the area way before Bremco formed. It was originally for just the government owned university. but they started providing a newly needed service to citizens in town. When Virginia was in Raleigh she introduced a bill to remove New River from ASU. But she couldn't get the backing to do so. Their supporters argue that it helps with tuition costs.

But if you notice, ASU's hotel is now gone. They serviced for years as an educational service. But they weren't allowed to advertise really and fully compete with other hotels and restaurants in the area. Finally they decided the losses weren't worth what little benefit they claimed it provided the school.

No. It's illegal in NC to use public money for profit. And to explain that further, the public system is not allowed to compete with private business.

I think we need a little more information which is hard to come by from ashe county. How many calls a year are they running, what are the fees, mileage charges. How many employees and their salaries, equipment expenses, fuel expenses. I think one new ambulance 4x4 which you must have up here cost well over a 100 thousand with no equipment on it. You must maintain a building to put the units in pay for training, uniforms. Do a little prowling and get back to us.

Should the county take over ambulance service and bring money back to tax payers or keep paying the owners now million dollars a year plus the money from all the calls to get richer and richer
