Fins....bless your heart...you just don't get it. Barring criminal charges the Sherriff will do what he wants for 4 years. We can all voice any opinion we want during that time. It may have ....no effect. It is his office to run..Bufurt had his way until charged. Nothing on this sight will change that. He was elected. He is in charge. If I was Howell, the twelve posters on this site would be at the bottom of my concerns list.

Oh sweety, you’ve either gotten extremely naive, or are trying hard to give Phil a pass. You’ve clearly forgotten how we work here. If there aren’t signs of measurable improvement in a reasonable amount of time, we will call the sheriff to task. We don’t expect things fixed overnight. That would be insane and chaotic (like Bufurt). But within 60 days we should have a plan and some of the worst problems should be on a path to correction. I suggest the sheriff learn to use social media to keep the voters informed on his plan and his progress.

Howell has 4 years to get the SO the way he wants it. Giving him time limits is just pure foolishness. He will organize his department at his pace. For the next 4 years our opinion will be just that.....an opinion....everybody has one.

Sheriff doesn’t have that power Tabby. After the convict has been charged, it’s up to the DA.

Maybe Howell will let that poor innocent man out of jail......before he gets cooties.

Sassy, if it takes him 4 years to show improvement then I believe there is something seriously wrong. He would probably not be reelected. I agree Afic, with in 60 days there should be change showing.

He’s got 60 days to show some noticible efforts to start fixing problems.

I think it's pretty obvious what the opinion of the voters were this time, we the people are simply not going to have the good ol boy system anymore. If the jail captain and other jailers who have been caught on camera and posted on this site are not terminated by Sheriff Howell, then to me that's a personal insult for my vote! The choice is a clear one, Sheriff Howell needs to fix the jail. If he ignores the jail as Bucky did then we the people will vote him out as well. Simple.

I'M SO MAD!

Just Curious after the county finally got their butt handed to them by bufurt and Hartley along with bucket were put in place surely it was well known by both the jail situation and the looming lawsuits. All bucket had to do was get that jail under control and he would be sheriff today. Yet he chose to do nothing and remain silent. Hartley did get the dog catchers out and back on the job after bufurt made them a bed at the jail so he could take them over also.

I agree with sassy, let's support the elected officials unless they give us a reason not to.

I also agree with fins, Bucky had a chance to right the wrongs in the jail. I really wanted to vote for him in the beginning, but you never knew what the guy stood for really. I think if he would have stood up now and in when he was formerly the chief deputy and knew the corruption that was going on then and stated he didn't condone what was going on. I don't know if he did or didn't but if he didn't he should have spoke up! And things that were said negatively about him on here. He had an opportunity to speak up and tell us he wasn't going to hire people by the good old boy system and was not going to allow corruption in the jail... which is a huge money maker for our county! I know he wanted the jail to be full, but if it's not going to be run properly it could get shut down. I am happy about Phil, don't get me wrong, I voted for him, but I think Bucky should have spoken up more and like I said before righted some of the wrongs that were going on while he had the opportunity.

Mole.....this is not St. Loo or Kansas City......and shocker......you are not Wyatt Earp. Let's all try to respect and support the people, we as Ashe County citizens, have elected. The candidates that won may not have been our first choice but thy are now our elected officials. We should respect and support them until they give us a legitimate reason not too.
