The 4 year rate is 86.8 ranking them 198 out of 387 High Schools in NC. That is not my idea of good.

It’s not about celebrating only athletics
And graduation rates are not poor - 89%

So lets celebrate the Athletics and continue to have piss poor graduation rates. Lets Continue to only look at the select few and keep denying the poorest kids opportunities for higher education. Lets continue to see our youth on the arrest reports and struggling with mental illness.
Athletics has its merits, but they should not be a priority.

Makes you wonder
Why would the high school not want something for the kids?
Makes you realize all the times you’ve seen the superintendent out at sporting events running with the spirit flag, dancing with the band and such has been to gain attention for herself. If it’s true and there is no pep rally, she’s tooting her own horn out in public and not putting the kids first.

That's an impressive list. All of those students actually got a high school pep rally their senior year. I think parents should go to school and tell them that this is ridiculous. Of course, we should support athletics but mostly support our kids. Kids who do not even play sports love the pep rally and homecoming activities. These kids work every day to practice 3 hours a day and then do homework and they have 4 years of high school and for the first time, they canceled the Homecoming pep rally. Just to look from the outside, athletics are not important to the current administration and Mrs. Yates. Only test scores, not students happiness and what's best for students. I know there are some very disappointed students at the high school due to this decision. Were students ever considered?

Sassy - thank you for sharing those student athletes
The point of high school athletics (or any level of athletics) isn’t about becoming a college athlete or going to the NBA - the points of being an athlete include: being a part of something bigger than yourself, physical activity, rule following, responsibilities, time management, representing yourself, your school and community well - I could go on, and on, and on

Josh majored in entrepreneurship and now keeps hundreds of cattle and has a landscaping business......just a year out of school. I think he will make it on his own without ever taking a day job.

And yes, WCU is a terrible school academically. That guy will be working in the WJPD in two years.

Billy please share where you played college football. I’d love to see you tell Josh WCU is terrible. A player who attains a scholarship to play D1 sports regardless of level should be congratulated and encouraged to pursue the challenges of balancing academics with sports. Also, Hogan “Turtle” Windish is currently playing at UNCG.

Josh Wineberg started for 4 years at WCU at right tackle. Mikeal Elliott is a starter on the ASU wrestling team. Noah Gouge is the number 1 shooter on his college team. They are the most recent college successes.

Students love pep rallys. Superintendent Yates says she is student focused. Is this true for this situation? Why are we doing this to our students? Is there any other high school in the state that doesn’t have a pep rally for Homecoming? So sad for our students in Ashe thanks to them.

I always looked forward to pep rallies when I was in high school.

Probably apathy and lack of attendance. The only people who go to those games are parents and those old people you see at the barber shop who haven’t ever left the county and talk about the “long hairs” and “the gays.” West Jefferson isn’t Hoover, Alabama or Dillon, S.C.

Was a reason given for canceling the pep rally?
