Dr Wonsick announced last year, before the former CEO announced her retirement, that she would no longer be delivering babies that were not already being cared for by her at the beginning of 2020. I wasn't a fan of Callahan the few times I saw him.

So this site does have power. So the Previous CEO is gone, her chief head of nursing is gone, and I have heard that one more was reassigned duties. Maybe the board will now act more quickly rather then sit back and hope it just goes away.

I believe there is a new or at least an interim Chief Nursing Officer. I have not heard more about the other top, Departmental and middle management positions. Mr. Yates ,with the support of the Board, will need to make some sweeping changes with pay rates and benefits to attract a local or at least semi-local work force back to the organization. Once he gets them in changes in management style and consistent expectations from all members of the team will help with retention.

The infrastructure updates and repairs will also take time and planning and finances to implement, unless there is some big pot of money out there somewhere the infrastructure investment and increased payroll and benefit costs will make managing the organization through this turn around quite a challenge.

the Board will have to insist that Adept live up to its contract in providing consulting and managerial support through this time. With Adept's assistance all the fixed cost investment might be possible with Federal or State guaranteed bonds/loans, (USDA/HUD) the application process for these funds is expensive and administratively complex, that is where the management company could lend its expertise. That type of debt restructuring might free up the operating cash to support the workforce improvements that are also needed.

Top line revenue management will also need to occur, it is tough to cut expenses to prosperity. It will be interesting to watch as Mr. Yates presses Adept to deliver on the promises made originally to bring specialty care to Ashe Memorial from within the Adept system.

Seeing how some of the dust is settling why did Dr Callahan leave?

The ER doesn't look like a daycare with all the teenage welfare moms, fewer crackheads, nursing staff speaks fluent English. They've cleaned it up nice.

From a short review of Mr. Yate's resume and internet presence it appears that he has strong Hospital and Medical Practice Operational experience. Moving from the "Head Shed" back into the field has to feel liberating and should allow him to place his stamp on the facility.

I agree that he will face a tough road over the first 12 months, as he re-establishes a level of trust with the Medical Staff and the employees, addresses the deferred infrastructure maintenance issues and builds a team of top and middle managers who are all interested in moving the organization forward vs. a CYA mentality.

Top Line revenue management as well as expense management will be critical in moving forward.

Staff recruitment and retention following a review of pay and benefits comparing the same to the local area will be important. Pay is not the final answer to retaining employees, you have to have a solid working environment with capable supervisors and managers to retain folks if you are unable to pay at top of scale against your competition.

Hopefully the folks at Adept will provide Mr. Yates with the support and consulting assistance he needs to explore and test new methods at AMH to provide great care, evaluate and weed out poor performing Providers and improve employee relations.
