It appears we can now add nurses to the list of whiners. Teachers still head the list.

Back in the day, hospital staff worked rotating 8 hour shifts, every 6 weeks you moved from day (7-3) to evenings (3-11) to nights,(11-7) played heck with family life etc. As the industry attempted to attract more and more folks into the various medical professions you started seeing modifications to the traditional manufacturing shift mentality, first with idea of Baylor schedules where you agreed to work two 16 hour shifts every weekend for a full weeks pay, then came the move to 12 hours shifts which allowed the illusion of additional time off. The 12 hour shift pattern in fact assists the employer in avoiding overtime, as you have 4 hours per week to play with before crossing the statutory definition of overtime pay requirements.

I believe that the 3 12 mentality has lead to increased burn out and physical problems for the individuals working those shifts, research has shown the the best mental acuity occurs during the initial 6 hours of a work shift with errors and injuries increasing at a steady rate during hours 8-12. The 50% longer work shift play havoc with the feet and legs of the staff, if they are practicing patient center care, and actually providing care at the bed side.

And I think if Ripshin can read, he/she/it will find out that every hospital is short staffed. There are people in Wilkes working three 12 hour days in Winston and part time in either Wilkes, Boone, or Ashe. It is the same everywhere.

Very stressful jobs

Amh was a great place but the "- ceo has ruined the place , she has made it as inpersonal as she can she don’t want a family oriented place because she doesn’t have a family, nobody can stand her. She has let good employees go for no reason and she everybody else scared to death about losing their job. Why does the board allow her todo it?? Why is the county still supporting the hospital when they are taking jobs from the taxes payers ?? Most people she is hiring don’t live here so they don’t support the hospital with tax dollars. It seems they don’t have enough people to cover and it gets worse every day. When is the board going to wake up and see the financial situation is not better but better covered up??

For those who have been commenting on Novant and its leadership. I find the linked article very informative. It appears that Novant CEO Carl Armato, learned early in his career that allowing individual employees the freedom to implement innovative change was key to a successful outcome. https://www.healthle...ee-bonuses

I've been a patient of Ashe Memorial numerous times. For the most part everyone that works in the emergency room are very professional and very helpful. On a few occasions I've had a very rude nurse taking care of me. I just wonder if she's the one trying to cause this big stink over the hospital? I was there a few days ago and was thankful to see some new faces. And yes one of those new faces was a new nurse fresh out of school. She was very pleasant and helpful.

Some people just don't like change. Sometimes things have to change for the betterment of the organization. Everyone has their own ways of doing things. So others have to adapt to those changes. You have to give it a chance to work. Some things may work, some might not. But you won't know till you try it.

I have a good friend that is a hospital CEO in another county. He told me that there were employee problems when he took the facility over. After a short time he identified 3-4 people that were the root of most of the problems. Those individuals were called in, he and HR suggested that they might be better off in another hospital and let them resign. He told me the attitudes from employees did a complete turn around. And these people were not managers.

Silent and JT, the employee opinion surveys are the property of the AMH Board, and may be used as a tool by management to judge the effectiveness of their policies and procedures as well as provide the employees an anonymous voice to speak about management at all levels. PressGaney is one firm who conducts surveys on behalf of management. Management contracts with PG, knowing they will not have access to the classification data uploaded from the organizations HR systems. The classification data in PG's case is last four of social and department where the employee works. The last four of social allows for a unique login to be established for each employee and protects the integrity of the survey from individuals logging in on multiple occasions or even unaffiliated persons from hacking the survey process.

Since there are questions relating to supervision on the survey, department assignment is critical. Department with fewer than 5 completed surveys are combined with other small departments to futher protect the persons taking the survey.

I'm sure ther will be naysayers who will not believe this process. I encourage you to reach out to Press Ganey to confirm the methodology used in the survey process.

As previously posted, as a private entity AHM is under no obligation to post the results of this survey or any other information. In the current age of transparency, the results should be shared with the workforce as well as management's action plan to improve in the low scoring areas. I'm sure some civic minded employee will post the results for all to see, if management chooses not to.

As a recently voted top 100 performing Critical Access facility, I have to believe the metrics used to commonly judge the performance of this organization are near the top in the country. AMH has received this award in multiple years, some under current management some under old. This tells me that the management style or culture has less to do with the organization's performance than the pride and expertise of the workforce. Top 100 awards, best national rural health provider awards, American Hospital Assiciation NOVA awards and statewide recognition for work in the community are not awards for management, they are awards for the performance of the entire team at the organization. It appears that AMH has a great team in place.

I feel the posts have served their purpose. AMH is a good hospital that gives good care but the environment for the employees is such that experienced health caregivers are leaving/ being forced out, most dramatically in the ER. This will affect the care in the future. A lot of the less strident posts seemed to agree. Now the people of Ashe county know.

I've had a lot of post get flagged, sometimes I have no idea why. Happens to all of us. You just have to keep thinking of different words to use, it seems some certain words get your post flagged by the system automatically, avoid those words.
