JEFFERSON �" The Ashe County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to appeal the planning board’s recent order to grant Appalachian Materials a watershed permit for their proposed asphalt plant in Glendale Springs. The commissioners agreed to appeal the decision to Superior Court after an executive session in the May 7 meeting. “The commissioners strongly disagree with the order and the findings of the planning board,” county attorney John Kilby said.The planning board voted 3-2 in their April 19 meeting to adopt the findings of fact and conclusions of law from Appalachian Materials’ legal team regarding the watershed permit. The watershed appeal is the county’s second appeal in this matter. The first appeal, regarding the polluting industries ordinance, is currently in the Court of Appeals, according to Kilby. Ashe County has spent upward of $600,000 in legal fees appealing the proposed asphalt plant, according to a public records request obtained by Appalachian Materials’ legal team. Prior to the executive session, various members of the Protect our Fresh Air Committee spoke to the board of commissioners about the proposed Asphalt Plant. Pat Considine, chairperson of the Protect Our Fresh Air Committee, argued that an asphalt plant could hurt the tourism industry and affect the value of property in the area.“The past three years have not been any fun for people trying to stop this asphalt plant,” Considine said. “We imagine somebody in Ohio getting a lovely Ashe County Christmas Tree that’s full of soot. You’re going to lose a large amount of tax value due to the pollution (the asphalt plant) will cause.” Considine predicted property devaluation due to the plant, costing the county money. Considine also predicted that the county would lose tourism revenue due to the proposed plant. “We could see a drop in 10 percent of tourism money from people,” he said. “If you’re on the (Blue Ridge Parkway) and you see black smoke in the air at Glendale Springs, I would just keep on going.”

The county looks worse and worse by the day on this. Of course that's what happens when you let slingin' Sammy Yearick and a bunch of realtors try to sway the decision making.

Hopefully, this boondoggle, like some others, ended with Roark's resignation. The three commissioners that have shown good sence in the last months, outnumber the fools. Buying out Yearrick's contract would be a small price to pay to prevent more of these. Common sence decisions do not usually result in lawsuits.

I just read online at Ashe county line that the legal bill for the county against the asphalt plant has reached 600 thousand dollars. What are these idiots thinking?

Property to expensive in Cary.
It would be hard to put through any such ordinance, anyone doing it would probably be voted out, but that doesn't mean those that take their place would ever actually repeal it, they might tweak it. I mean I don't know if you pay attention or not but once the government passes something at any level its very hard to ever get rid of it.

Personally, I would like to see some commercial poultry houses, hog lots, and feed lots in downtown Raleigh, Charlotte and Greensboro. Might remind those folks that meals have origins, and those origins need to be protected.

Jr, only is talking about rural zoning. And there is no way I see you supporting such a cause.
For the record, about 20 years ago a group tried to push rural zoning through in Watauga and it failed miserably. I dont see it happening in Ashe.

Onlyinashe is correct though. Had the commissioners properly planned for expansion 10 years ago this wouldn't have been an issue. Instead they hem and how and we had the sovereign citizen Price and the wicked stepmother Poe. More interested in enriching themselves than making sure the county was run in any meaningful way. Roark, Rose and Perry all seem to fit that mold as well.
It's like the millions they've wasted on that airport or the town alderman in WJ wasting money on a Caboose.

onlyinashe, I dont think land use would have made any difference in this instance. Namely elmer fudd was led like a horse on a lead to do what the minority wanted in not allowing the plant. I think the same thing will happen again with or without land use.

The continued lack of effective, and legal, land use planning guidelines have cost the county tax payers over $325k.
Do property owners in the county want land use guidelines, most likely not. Many folks will not be willing to give up personal "rights" the the collective good of others. That is just human nature.
Should this be done anyway? I believe it should. I've heard many folks plead to keep Ashe County rural, simple, "cool", and the like. To accomplish that you have to get in front of growth and plan for it. Land use guidelines are a method of developing those plans.
With land use plans in place you can direct infrastructure development and focus governmental spending where possible growth is acceptable.

I do hope that the media by bringing to the public eye how much the mouth breathers have spent on legal fees made their decision to rid us the law suit easy. Remember that McNeil really only made the decision to rid us of this. The bill needs to go to elmer Fudd aka Roark.

They were never going to win.
They were told that fighting it was a losing proposition anyway. Yet they spent 375k dollars of taxpayer money fighting a losing fight that they always knew they would lose. I"m with FINS they each owe us 75k dollars.

So $375k divided by 5 equals $75k that each of the mouth breathers owes the tax payers for ever trying to fight this in the beginning.
