Commissioners fail to support education

Time to get the proposed county budget posted in the local papers before it is voted on by the board. Need to include a public comment phase prior to approval. Any idea how to get this done?

by the way, welcome back Dawg, missed the fun.

Buy a plane and reap the benefits...

As it has been mentioned here several times, money gets peed away on fluffy project and programs, misused and wasted on unnecessary programs, fraudulently abused on needed programs, and then when something of substance like expanding the local education system it gets turned away. The civilian aircraft hobby landing strip benefits regularly. I'd rather have seen the money spent on an enhanced college here.

From the intelligence Mr Chairman has shown, he may have no idea there is education past the 3rd grade.

Not to turn this into a national or even state political issue, but this is the political climate we live in. Our political parties don't know the definition of smart responsible spending. It's either spend at will or no spending at all.

Ashe Commissioners can read? That surprises me. Maybe someone converts the posts on here into pictures so those brilliant minds can fill with knowledge.

How much training does one require to stand at the county line, and wave big while saying "Ya'll come back now ya hear...

It is unfortunate that our county leaders and county manager are ill-equipped to understand the connection between poverty and opportunity. The college can save parents lots of money, provide training for companies like GE, and be a part of the solution to getting people out of poverty. Instead, our "leaders" act like it's an afterthought--until they need it to help with getting a company or something. Or until their kids need it. Ignorance, I guess.

You are right Heels. That old worn out down trodden poor mountain man record just doesn't wash any more. Yes there are poor here like everywhere else. An spending money on improving the available education opportunities is money well spent. Calling them three stooges is being too kind. The term Mouth Breather is well deserved and more appropriate in my opinion. And there are small industries that would be interested in moving here with proper advertising and forward thinking demonstrating a willingness to help them locate here. If the future is to be tourism, then so be it. The winter season is off putting for lot of people and we don't have enough real winter to attract the die hard winter loving people. Can't change the weather.

Industry has left, but the college has stepped up and provided training to those that lost their jobs. Not all have been able to get jobs but they have definitely been a great asset. GE would not be here if it was not for the college. As a matter of fact Leviton and Gates would not have lasted as long as they did without the college.

Tourism is the focus now but there still must be infrastructure to maintain that growth. Check out the continuing education classes. Valuable classes for those looking to start a business or learn a trade.

One excuse we can not use is we are a poor county(Which someone correct me if I am wrong but one of the 3 stooges made that remark at the meeting) If we are poor then what can we do to get out of poverty? Education is a good place to start. We all can use a little learning!

Its time for old dog to weigh in on the wilkes community college missed opportunity. Likely the chance to have a college right here in the county will never come again. With the college here it would have drawn industry to the county. It would have kept families in the county spending money, building houses and growing the tax base of this county. The owners of the land were all but going to give the land for the college. The only reason one of the numb skulls could come up with was the land purchase.

Face it, industries have left the county and they aren't coming back. Remember the focus is on tourism now.

Here I go again...its a disgusting shame they can sit there and hand an air landing strip 2 million dollars a year for only private citizens who own a second home here to land their plane yet pass on the opportunity for a community college campus. Priceless. I wont mention two empty buildings owned by the county.

The next time 6.5 million will be 8.0 million plus. It is not a matter of if the funds are going to be given to the college its a matter of when, and the decision cost the county more money in the long run.

I'm confident the commissioners made a wise choice, and will find more productive ways to drop 6.5 million dollars.

With the rising cost of education, many parents will have no choice but to send their children to community college for the first couple of years to get the basics out of the way before moving on to a university. Stifling the local community college system by not supporting expansion for needed classroom space isn't doing our children any favors.

Badguy, UP didn't even pay much attention to High School English, let alone recognize the value of having a college anywhere nearby. Let alone attend one. He will just see this and think to himself, "huh?".

Bring a college in? It's already here genius. They just wanted to EXPAND. Maybe you should try some college for yourself.

Up I can't believe that I read what I believe that I just read. I wish that I could have misinterpreted what I read, but I have re-read it several times and I do think I understand. You have written here one of the most stupid, ignorant, narrow minded and short sighted observations of anyone posting here.
