I dont claim to be very good at arithmetic but if the manager says 1/4 cent will bring in 500K a year then 7 cents brings in 14 million with his figuring? No way.

Farmer, tell the idiot that you can't eat mark sales tax. It has to go to the general fund. Which means they can end up blowing it

I for one will not vote for it!!! We pay too much taxes as it is!

underdog2

It will never pass a vote of the people. They may as well be looking else where, like that dam airport.

Best I can tell from watching Monday's meeting, the county manager plans to use the money to bail out the hospital for a couple of years and then spend it on school construction. He estimated it would bring in around $500,000 a year.

You are correct bear its a vote to put it on the ballot for the same idiots that elected the pricks we have now.

Yes the weekenders would pay the tax when they are here in the county but not all week. A property tax increase would get the same from everyone.

If the commissioners approve of the 1/4 cent tax increase, it's just to put it on the ballot for the public to vote on and approve. I read earlier on this thread (can't remember who stated it), that the increase would be the burden of permanent residents and tourists/Floridians would avoid the increase. Well, that's completely incorrect. This is a proposed sales tax increase and will be the burden of everyone who buys those taxed items in Ashe County. This has nothing to do with property taxes.

Dirt head you have to be the dumbest idiot yet. We are talking volunteer fire departments that the building is empty and the trucks are parked in an empty building. Even paid/volunteer departments dont have computers in the fire trucks. We are talking about a county that has departments that would do good to run 35 fire calls a year. What they should worry about is the areas not covered by any department.

Someone needs to stick a cork in the county managers money dike. Where in the budget is he playing christmas with our money?

Computer aided dispatching has been around for years, it's high time Ashe step into the modern world and give up the tin cans and string for communication..

We all know how the hose jockeys love fancy toys. They have zero need for computers. I would support a quality commercial grade GPS system, if it could be proven accurate for local roads. But that would require some serious testing first to prove reliable.

I've heard from some of my fire department friends that the manager has talked to them about putting Computers like the deputies have in the fire trucks.

First, our ambulance service is a private contractor. If they want vests, they buy them, not the county. Second, areas with dangerous neighborhoods are where they have put vests on medics. Places with high gang activity and violence. We don't need them. But, like I said, if they want them, they can buy them

Note from GoAshe: a portion of this post was removed that was in response to the earlier trolling.

Actually vesting the medics would be a good idea, several cities already do that now. They never know what type of scene they could be walking into. Say for instance someone has a grudge against one of them. They call 911, give some fake medical condition. On a routine medical condition no law enforcement will be responding, then when arriving on the scene the said paramedics become targets for some whacko jacked up on God knows what with a rifle!!

Just something to think about...

Secret, I want tax money spent responsibly. If there is money left over for frivolous things like bulletproof vests for dog catchers. I rank this up there with school yard Barney's as stupid ideas. Granted, the school Barney's cost a lot more. If you look at the link I posted, there are fifteen cases of dog catchers being shot on the job in 120 years. There were more cases of them shooting themselves than that. And on top of that, why do the dog catchers need better vests than the Barney's get? The new manager thinks our money is printed on Christmas trees

Well have dog catchers been targeted somewhere and the manager and board did another knee jerk reaction and bought them the best vests money could buy? Since when did the dog catcher start carrying guns on his side and got the power of arrest? Whats next, get all the paramedics and hose jockeys vests also?

I'm sure there is even more spending going on, that the citizens know nothing about... It small town politics at it's best.
