Well I guess we know why Roark defends the manager so. The rumors are true Roark is set to step into the maintenance supervisor spot. When the last supervisor retired Roark had just voted to extend the managers contract and give him 2yrs severance in the event he was fired. He also made the fuss about not wanting him to be evaluated. Wonder why? Talk about political wrangling, if this is not illegal it definitely is unethical!

Great idea. I have often wondered why politicians do not face criminal penalties for their violations of law when it comes to their governance. But then of course the answer is obvious. They make the laws to first and foremost protect their own jobs.

Our company performs an employee engagement survey every two years. We use the same vendor who conducts our customer surveys to perform this function. The fee for this survey the reports following the survey, which includes bench-marking the results against similar sized employers in the same industry, is based on the number of potential respondents. For a company with 250 to 350 employees this amounts to approximately $3,000. Employees are asked to self identify if they are management or line staff, and a couple other questions which allows the vendor to group employees into departments and under lines of management. In this way Senior management gets a look at how they, as Senior management is doing in key leadership area, and how department managers are performing in the eyes of their employees.

The survey is administered online, and the contract we sign with the vendor prohibits them form sharing any identifiable information about the survey participant. Small department, those with less than 5 employees responding, have their responses aggregated with other small departments to further protect the identity of the survey respondent.

The companies who perform these surveys are many, the practice is wide spread, and if management uses the information to improve their performance and the performance of the business the results are positive.

Does it sting when you read individual comments that trash you and your fellow managers? sure it does, but we are all wearing our big boy pants and move forward towards improving the perception of the employees of management and making our business better overall.

If you want to read about organizations that have employees evaluate their supervisors then I suggest you read Ken Lynn's newest letter to the editor in the Jefferson Post.

Then you obviously have no clue what employee engagement is or do you have the ability to comprehend one if it was in front of you.

I've actually as part of an employee in private business taken such surveys before, and yes the company acted upon what was said then. I should note this wasn't for any company in Ashe County though, and it would do the county some good if more companies as well as our government adopted them here.

Taken right from the Lowes website....looks like someone has idea what they are talking about....

In addition to feedback generated through our Bright Ideas suggestion program and employee focus groups, our annual Employee Opinion Survey gives all regular full- and part-time employees across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Asia a chance to voice their opinions about their work experience. The survey helps Lowe's identify trends and create new initiatives to drive the engagement and growth of our employees.
Lowe's 2010 Employee Opinion Survey showed employee engagement remains strong. Last year marked the fourth year in a row of an upward trend for Lowe's. Our employee engagement score also rates well when compared to the benchmark for best-performing companies.

You may be right, but it is also a possibility that it is part of a large collaboration of counties not just Ashe so they will have something to measure against. If that is the case then they may have been asked to participate for a small fee.
