Values 7 years ago are not the values of today.

It is OK for us to not agree with each other. I was asked for an opinion on guns and I gave it.

Why does anyone want to carry a gun to a park in the first place? What is there that scares you so? Sure maybe no one here is a gunslinger, but somewhere someone with a concealed weapon permit will cause a death in a park. Then we will have to pay for security in all the parks when that happens. Where will that money come from?

Achs they removed a 1.6 million dollar piece of property from the tax roll for us to sit and look at.

Nancy, I suggest you get a clue before you start spouting off on issues you obviously know nothing about. I've never seen anyone in Ashe twirling a weapon in a public place. Not to mention that the issue at hand involved concealed weapons permit holders as Joseph T explained.
Nancy, Where are you from and how long have you lived in Ashe County?

I know that the property in front of the courthouse is worth a million dollars. AF Bank - Life store valued it at 1.6 millon when they wrote the original loan. I offered what would come to over 1 million for it in pieces 7 years ago and was refused

Gun control
Lets say you take your children and family to the park for a nice picnic. Every person is allowed to carry and some Bozo showing off his or her skills at twirling a run shots your child or family member. Will you accept that Bozo had the right to be in the park with a gun and that is just the price you had to pay? That your child had to give their life to protect your right to carry? Picture a beautiful park with everyone walking around with a gun, not a pretty picture. It will happen you know, someone will pay for your right to carry in a park. A place where you should feel safe. I lost a son years ago and although it was illness I can feel the loss today as if it just happened. If it had been at the hands of Bozo I would want to see a change so that no one lost a child in the same way. For the most part people with guns are safe but there will always be a Bozo showing off.

There are always two sides and sometimes we do not get our way. We either try to understand or we just keep fighting to have our way. There seems to be no middle ground anymore as people are so angry. We all have lost so much it is understandable that we are mad but at some point we will have to agree on not always getting our way in life.

Nancy you have just shown us that you don't have a clue the type of people who will be twirling a gun as you say are the type of people who are going to carry their gun anyway as they don't care what the law say's. There is no reason that a person with a NC CCW permit should not be allowed to carry. Those of us that have a CCW permit have passed County,State, federal and mental health back ground checks as well as having taken the State mandated class on the use of deadly force. These are not the kind of people that are going to be playing with a gun at the park.

I for one can not see that a piece of property anywhere in these times should be valued at a million dollars.

I need to go back and add up all the expenses on the budget under (other or misc.) There is a lot there not explained that should be.

Yes we may come to a time where services will have to be cut if we do not find the money to pay for them. As I said we need to look at where the money in the budget is going.

Secret it gets better the county made two new positions in the tax office and hired the people that worked for the last vendor as full time county employees. Every body keeps asking what and where would you cut this would be a good place to start get rid of unneeded people in the tax office and go back to a private vendor. The next place we can trim some fat is the building inspections dept. with building droping off we don't really need more than one or two inspectors. That bunch at enviromental services needs to be trimed to Andy and his minions have piss off a lot of people. You would not believe some of the stupid crap that goes on in that place. That office use to run with just to people who did everthing and there was never a problem not to mention they were well like by everyone.

So lets add up it up get rid of the two assessors positions at the tax office and one building inspector and one person from Andy's group. That comes to 4 county positions add up the salary, ins, retirement and other expense's and we have just save a good bit of money. I will be honest and say I don't know what everyone make but I bet we could save somewhere around $100,000 by getting rid of these 4 unneeded positions.

JoeT I somehow let that information slip through my little mind. You ar eright, that would be where inconsistancies could happen. I personnally never had a problem with the vendor they used previously. On one appraisal period though, the identical house to mine right next door was appraised for several **** less than mine. With one phone call and a re-visit by the appraisal folks, mine was dropped to match. Anyway, thank you. And the fox was guarding the henhouse. The more we look around, the more it seems that our elected officials haven't been looking out for us but rather, in the least, have been overlooking underperforming and slip-shod operations by or friends and neighbors who work for us at the County level. The whole things to a long hard look. Who is going to do it? How are they going to do it? Or will the people of the County have another drink of the Kool-Aid and elect more of the same ol'same ol'.

We were lied to yet again when we were told the tax rate was set at revenue neutral. This being the case where did the 1million come from to buy the land, the fairy god mother. This action alone leads me not believe anything that comes from them. Perhaps Dan would not come along on this and other matters so they canned him to shut him up.

Perhaps Dan would like to join us here and share some thoughts with us on his campaign.

I knew there was a problem with the health dept. but I did not realize how bad it was until I read the article in the post. Now things there have gone way past out of control when you have to go past your county commissioners to the state representatives coming to the meeting in fleetwood to get something done. Yet again I see the short minded board we have.

I too am still waiting for some sort of ideas about how she intends to operate things with less money. I still say if the County's income is reduced by lowering our taxes, then some services must be reduced. It isn't mean. It isn't spiteful. Simply put, maybe we just can't afford to provide what we have been providing to as many people as we have in the past. maybe in the future we could reconsider expanding the services, but for now they must be reduced since everybody is hurting in the downturned economy. Maybe it is the "new normal" and we can never in our lifestimes return to the levels that were enjoyed before. Something has got to give. Come on Nancy, and all the other candidates, tell us what you plan. Nancy is the only one though who has mentioned reducing taxes and tax rates. If there are inequities with the way that the hired tax assessor vender did things, lets get that straightened out. Fair is fair. Maybe a new vendor is in order. Maybe there is a real and legal reason for the way two separate but very similar properties were appraised for tax purposes. Lets find out. How?
The problem is there was no outside tax assessor vender the county did the assessment its self instead of hiring an outside firm. That is like letting the fox guard the hen house and should be against state law. I believe this is the reason that most people saw a 20 percent increase in their values

Thanks underdog. I was actually going to try again myself but, it was apparent that she is not aware of the issue. I think she is probably well meaning enough but is not really very well informed about things in Ashe county. I'm not going to pick on her because I give her credit for at least thinking she could get into county government and learn about things and then possibly contribute her ideas.

On the other hand, if she doesn't know whats going on and can't share her proposed solutions, I can't see anyone taking her seriously (sorry Nancy, I truly mean no offense)

I don't know much about the commissioners. Like most people I guess I dont pay enough attention to things until they do something to tick me off and THEN I take an interest. I will vote for the 2 who supported my gun rights! I trust them because their ACTIONS tell me to. Beyond that, I will have to cast my third vote to the candidate who best convinces me that he or she will correct what has been done and allow me to carry in the parks. (I don't even go to the parks so THAT isn't really the issue- but the fact that they chip away at my rights like this scares me)

Nancy, who asked anything about carrying in a bar? Native asked about a very specific circumstance, and you still dodged the actual question. Care to try again?

nativeson We have a right to carry a gun. My Grandfather was a world champion skeet shooter and taught we well. I was better at trap than skeet but could out shoot anyone. Perhaps not now but I was very good and went to the trap range very week. That being said, not sure I think a gun is good to carry in a bar where people are drinking as that is a accident waiting to happen. You do not have to agree with me or me you but you asked. Like I said a commissioner is not an Emperor, they are just one person who is suppose to carry out the majority will of the people.

As far as meetings go, I will be there next week because I can but see no reason not to hold the meetings at a time when more can attend.

I have noticed people on here complain about time commissioners meetings are held, people complain they can't come at that time, BUT, they can be on go ashe all times of the day and night. Even the three to five pm time. Do you all attend the hearings, budget meetings held at night?

Fins you took the words right out of my mouth.

Nancy heres a simple statement/question, Joe for some time has said the meetings held in the afternoon so no working man can go to a meeting without using his time off. Your stance on having the meetings in the evening so working voters can attend.

Btw nancy send fins and the dog a picture and we will see about employing you at the strip club.

Fins

Posted 11:30 am, 03/02/2012

Nancy, did you seriously ask dog if he would like a strip club next door, and think his answer would be no? He would love one next door. So would i. That way I could walk (or stagger) home afterwards and not have to worry about Barney Fife. I could also offer room and board to any ladies too tired to drive after a late shift.
