Sounds like Sextown got his tail handed to him.

I don’t need to read anything, I’ve talked to a couple of the Watauga commissioners. They’ve enjoyed the comedy from the Ashe BOC for the last couple years. From what I’ve gathered, Removing the state appointees is really the only difference. Besides, the articles that did cover it don’t give much detail anyway.

Watauga's system seems to be working well since they dissolved their board and appointed an advisory board. And Yes Fins they did do it. If you keep reading the Watauga page you will see that the advisory board is completely appointed by the commissioners and is not a combination of state and local appointments.

Sexton and Poe were appointed by the State, then the board itself appointed Bowlin. Now that the DSS Board is dissolved the commissioners may selected an advisory board like Watauga has, if they so choose.

This was nothing more than political theater, here you go we give you what you want, make sure to vote for us in November. That's essentially what this is. There was no foresight into the future or other problems that will arise.

It's a knee jerk reaction. If Sexton was the problem remove him from the board. I mean he was appointed to the board by the BOC, so what makes you think he doesn't get appointed to the advisory board....maybe not immediately but I bet he winds back up there later.

Yes, it’s the same.

Actually Fins the page you provided says they have an advisory board selected by the BOC; I don't think that's the same as a DSS board.

If I remember right the Wilkes DSS was in trouble with the state which led to the BOC dissolving the board.

Yep, their website still says the board is there

I don’t think Watauga went through with dissolving the dss board. I know they considered it several years ago

Oh, for crying out loud. It works in Watauga, Wilkes and many other counties. The BOC cannot do anything other than what the federal and state governments tell them to do with DSS programs.

I understand their reason, but my concern is they aren’t considering the long term affects. It just seems their focus has only been immediate. Especially given the speed in which all this happened. ****, they are taking longer to decide on buying the dog catchers a couple rifles.

Heels09

That was the path of least resistance. The BOC wanted to avoid confrontation.

Exactly Fins, I think Poe has her own hidden agenda in this, but I think she helped expose Sexton. The best way to get rid of both was to dissolve.

After thinking about this more, and processing all the new info from last night, this seems to me like someone burning down their house to get rid of termites.

Seems now the beginning of the story was revealed last night. If only an employee would have come to goashe or pm'ed one of us, we could have helped bring this to light long ago.

Was a new Board appointed? I would hope that none of the recently departed DSS Board members would be considered for positions on the new advisory Board. As has been discussed in other threads the BOCC now has the tiger by the tail and will need to carefully take their next actions to remain in compliance with the numerous detailed requirements for continuing to recieve funding from the Federal and State Governments. The DSS Director is an attorney, and should be well aware of the requirements, I afraid the BOCC members, and the interim County Manager don't have a clue. Of course the recently departed Board were clueless also.

Jrscott - did you watch the public hearing? I did. If you had heard the comments from several DSS employees, three DSS directors, the Partnership for Children director and two other persons who spoke I can't fathom why you would think it's political. Sexton was obviously making the emplloyees miserable, was micromanaging, belittling, disrespecting and lying to the DSS directors and the employees. His job was made easier by Missy Bowlin - remember her? The lady who was texting with Jeff Rose in all those WBTV Buchanan texts that were released - the one who goes on cruises with Sexton and Yearick.
Then there's the board member who was taken to court for harassing a 12-year-old. According to the speaker, this board member - Cox, received a prayer for judgement.A memeber of social services board that is supposed to protect and assist children and the elderly adjudicated for harrassing a child. Really? Is this the type of perosn you want serving on that board?
When the majority of board members are self-serving and ignoring the needs and the best interests of the citizens and are appointed by the state and the board itself, I see no other logical choice but to dissolve it. Even Perry agreed in the end as the vote was 4-0.

People always think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, well until they get there. They may well regret this decision but unfortunately the damage is done. Note I'm no fan of Sexton or Poe, I just don't think this was a good move and was largely politically motivated.
