Factfiction

That is not what they told Nancy Henry, they said that yes they should figure out what they will do with it if they take it over. Listen to the tape and you will see

Brian Richardson said at meeting. All (commissioners) want to do is move DSS director under county manager. Advisory board to remain same.
No stopping or changes programs just DSS director under county manager. Department heads report to county manager who answers to commissioners who answer to voters. DSS director currently does not report to anyone. Advisory board can only hire or fire director. Director does not report to advisory board.

Yes fraud needs to be looked at for sure, but if the board of commissioners cannot even tell us what they will do if they take it over then that is very poor planning on their part. They should have had some idea what to do with DSS before it was brought to the public in the first place. It was not until Nancy Henry asked them what THEY would do that they even considered what they would do.

They forced Donna out as Director due to the fact they have driver her crazy for the last 2 years without a plan to fix what might need to be fixed.

Unless you have a better idea as a commissioner then butt out of what you know nothing about or how to make it better

Absolutely, there is always room for improvement. If we had capable leadership moving the DSS under their control might even be a good idea. For those in favor of this, they have yet to provide a transition plan. Which will more than likely include an advisory board and more resources to manage the budget from the County Manager.

For a group of people who maintain that they want transparency, they sure are keeping a lot of secrets.

And if the commissioners really want to cut spending, they would start with easy stuff that won't even affect 99% of the county residents. Like the airport

I completely feel that the DSS budget could be tightened up some. I've always agreed with that. But dissolving the board is a stupid idea. Lots of problems, including the liability of client confidentiality being questioned.

The statement below shows just how ignorant that this is and the Republican Party is. We have one of the highest Poverty rates,High unemployment, and a much older population that other counties. This is what you get when you don't know anything about Statistics and the root cause of the problems.

This is not about "Streamlining" its political. Just say it, stop using bogus statements and facts and tell the truth. In what little I could find about other counties that have done this, the cost savings are just shifted to other areas. So essentially we are going to see the County Managers office grow.

Former Ashe County Republican Party Chairman Glen Hentschel spoke strongly in favor of dissolving the DSS Board on Nov. 2. According to Hentschel, the amount of tax dollars spent on social services is much higher than in other counties, especially considering the county's population.

"Ashe County spends $4,310,000 for administrative costs for 27,000 people. Alexander County spends $3,398,000 for 38,000 people. I can go on and on," Hentschel said. "Watauga County, which has double our population, spends half as much money on the administration. To give you an example, they (Watauga DSS) have 47 people, Ashe County has 85. They have double our population, and yet, you as county commissioners have done nothing about it."

Old girl it was stated in the meeting by Rhodes so I was told that the state pays the county over a million bucks in rent a year for buildings. He stated this would be lost were the county to take over.

Overhead...it's called overhead. Not rent. Unless it's at Family Central and then it's called rent. I think. And it's a lot.

DSS has a full time attorney. Greir Hurley

Sorry Aw Shucks is correct. It is Wilkes that posts the attorney fees paid, not Watauga.

Last year Watauga paid over $200,000 for contract attorney work because their DSS doesn't have a full time attorney. In Ashe the DSS attorney cost around $84,000. Wilkes didn't have their contract attorney fees listed but they have to contract with an attorney to represent the Department when petitions are filed alleging abuse or neglect of a child or disabled adult. if their caseloads really are twice what Ashe's are, you can bet it cost them well more than what Ashe pays for a full time attorney.
