You're not doing any candidates any favors by endorsing them.

My thought is the old administration shot a blind guy on his own property during a wellness check and another person in his own driveway. That's enough for me. It's my understanding the Miller's Insurance had to drop the county as a client because their insurance carrier wouldn't cover the county anymore because of the shooting. It was costing them too much money. Crazy is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It's our obligation as voters to stop the craziness and vote for change.

Fins I didn't mean trial and error concerning outreach programs I was talking about the overall picture of reducing the drug and crime rate. I understand the programs may not be the best idea I just personally know some of my family and friends it really helped them, but they weren't living in a small town either so I'm sure that has something to do with it. If there are so much education on substance abuse and treating it we should implement what works.

Tabs if it comes across that I am trying to put Absher down I'm not. I'm just pointing out that he could have done things as chief deputy and I would have hoped he would have shared more of his plans running for Sheriff.

As far as the SRO topic maybe he could have sent the officers maybe not, it just appears to like a campaign scheme.

There has been negative talk on here and in town about Bucky I know, but I think it would be wise for him to comfort it. Not everyone one else defend him.

Fins......bless your heart......you truly are clueless about the youth of Ashe County. It is nearly impossible to teach anything to to children that know everything and have never been told no or corrected in any way. You go ahead and incorporate your science and see where it gets you.

Dedicated= riding out the same job for 30 years not making any waves to draw attention to ones self.

Curious, we have enough experience and enough science now in educating on substance abuse and treating substance abuse to know what works and what doesn’t. The problem is most school programs are run by podunk elected sheriff’s that think a fat deputy passing out some pencils and telling kids drugs are bad m’kay... will work. Done properly there is no more trial and error. It’s time to use proper education and science.

Curious, you said you had only been living here two years so I guess you don't know about the former D.A.R.E program in the County's elementary schools. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education was carried out by an officer from the SO during both the previous Hartley and Williams administrations. After all the school shootings the funding for this program was cut to be used toward putting an SRO in all the county schools. This was a joint decision by the BOE, Commissioners and the SO. I'm sure both Howell and Absher would love to have the funding to implement all the programs they feel are important but realistically that's just not gonna happen. You have to prioritize and stay within the budget and the tax revenue the County Commissioners allot to you. Absher knows this and if Phil is elected Sheriff he will come to realize this also.Ashe is a small county and everyone wants services new buildings, and program funding.

As for the SRO training you spoke of, the NC Justice Academy list some SRO training coming up next Feb. and March and there is a wait list for both classes. I don't think you can choose when it is convenient and get everyone trained during the summer. I am also confident they have some form of training and Bucky was speaking of the on going training they all need and new training the NCSA is developing. I know there have been multiple active shooter drills conducted in Ashe.

Howell is a likable guy and I hope he will be a good sheriff if he is elected. If you think he is the best choice then vote for him. But if you think he will have the funding to implement a lot of great community programs you are going to be disappointed.

I have already cast my vote for Absher. He is a dedicated LEO and doesn't deserve all the negativity directed towards him. According to some on here I don't know why we are wasting our time discussing Howell and Absher anyway. They say it is the chief deputy who runs the show and is responsible if ANYTHING goes wrong......while the sheriff just occupies an office.

There's no sure thing for anything that is done or any program. This process is going to be trial and error, but when you see more error than trial you know something has got to change.

The dare program in schools across the state are the worst waste of resources. As a matter of fact its just a campaign tool for a sitting sheriff.

That’s because Bucky already has 30 years in. He’s looking to retire. He just wants to continue business as usual, clock his time and go home at 2:00

And that's why I said I won't disagree. I was a part of an unsuccessful one myself, 2 of the people they had running the show weren't the best option. But I have been known people who have been a part of outreach programs that have been helpful, I can't say for sure how successful, didn't research that.

Ok, then maybe you are 100% right and they won't help not going to argue with you. My point was tabs asked me a question and I was able to answer him. Whether Phil's idea will be successful or not I don't know. Every time I ask questions about Bucky I get no clear positive answer, just the same repetitive one.

Wrong Tabby. Go back and read the post.

Curious, your disagreement is your own anecdotal opinion. It’s not based on any actual science, stats, or even experience in substance abuse education. Look up the facts. Very few of the programs work. Telling kids they will die while they see parents and relatives taking drugs and so far not dieing doesn’t work.

Fins I won't completely disagree with you. I know of some that there have been successful progams with dedicated people. And don't get me wrong but I don't think the program should be faith- based, those unfortunately seem to be the more unsuccessful ones. My opinion, just stick with the program at hand, sometimes the religion can be a turn off to kids and adults. Now will this completely help our drug problems, no, but it could help and so could trained SROs.

And yet Howell says he will start drug education in the schools and you still support him

Finny, the poster understood there were two separate questions(even if you didn't) and responded in kind.

These drug outreach programs are usually wastes of money. They don’t work because the programs lie to kids. They tell the kids, drugs will kill you. Yet the kids figure out their parents aren’t dead yet, the cops lied again. If anyone wants a prevention program to work, they have to find one that uses the truth and makes LEOs look like public servants instead of gestapo.

Tabby, Stupid, no one asked what more Bucket is going to do about drugs. It was asked what else is he going to do besides drugs. Try to keep up

ImJustCurious

Also I do believe that our deputies been more up to date equipment, but Phil mentioned fixing the detention center. Jail is supposed to help discipline inmates. If those pictures are true about what they were doing while in the jail, how exactly us that disciplining them? And from my understanding that took place while he was in management but that was only what I was told.

Tabs besides going to county lines and trying to find the source that they are coming from he is going to start youth outreach programs. If you don't take initiative with the kids the drugs are obviously going to get worse. I think it's great that our schools have SROs, but they are not able to do their jobs to their full potential, they are not trained, and that I found on Bucky's website - Thanks. The question I have is why would he wait? Why didn't he get them certified over the summer, it's a 5 day training. He saw a problem while "in management" and did nothing. I would have had more respect for him in the last few month for him "in management " if he started doing things to improve our county, like training our SROs and telling us how much more he is going to do as Sheriff. But like I said, there is more that just a drug problem in our county.

Nothing wrong with my reading compression. I know what question was asked in ADDITION to the drug problem question. I also know it is impossible to eradicate drug use. But if Bucky is expected to have a plan to do more on drugs, other than arresting drug dealers, it's fair to ask the poster what Phil's plan is also.

Tabby, your reading comprehension sucks. Below it was said drugs aren’t the only problem when it was asked what is Bucky going to do. No one said Howell has a plan that would end drug use. (That’s an impossible task). The question is what is Bucky going to do about the other issues instead of trying to sell everyone on he is doing something with a few drug busts
