Agent, I agree with you. However, I believe it was previously disclosed that the town cop lived in Doofus's neighborhood and knew him. So it's logical that he knew doofus's conditions. And if he did know, then he did have a duty to make sure they approached him in a manner suited to announce their arrival to someone with his conditions.

i just can't find a side to take in this case. It's kind of like picking sides in a crips and bloods fight

Back to basic. If someone points a gun at you, are you going to ask him "are you deaf?". If someone points a gun at you are you going to ask him "are you blind?". If someone points a gun at you are you going to ask "are you drunk?". If someone points a gun at you are you going to ask "are you stupid?". If someone points a gun at you are you going to ask "is that gun loaded?". If someone points gun at you are you going to ask "are you going to shoot me?". It was pointed out here previously that the whole thing was brought on by Cousin Doofus. Yes, it is a shame it ended the way that it did, but it seems that he and he alone put the wheels in motion himself.

No one could forget the crazy cousin

The old thread we did on this back in November 2012 is very different. Remember mary on that thread?

I can't find it. Finding anything on the Post's website more than a week old is pretty much impossible. But I believe the town cop that was involved was also the one that called in the disturbance.

The version given by this article is vastly different from the official version given by the sheriff's department. Didn't the previous report claim that he was on the porch and had been shooting and scaring the neighbors?
It seems that the discrepancy should be easy to prove by where investigators found the body

Can you find the original article on this? I couldn't find it.

There's the real question. The article now says that he hadn't broken any laws, and the police had no reason to be there. Unless he was under arrest then they had no right to be there or to order him around.

A few years ago, the police beat a man in Wilkes to the point of him having permanent brain damage. When it went to trial, the police "accidentally" lost 20 minutes of video footage, right around the time that the beating started. I know that's a different county and Sheriff, but it shows that it's not uncommon for the police to move facts around when it benefits them.

I agree Fins.

It's probably worth remembering that watauga had a deputy killed just 4 months before this shooting. Obviously that would have been in the back of the Barney's minds when answering a similar call.

Thanks monkey; it's sad that someone is dead, but I read in the mountain times that he had been drinking. Also, what stood out to me was the questionable arguments that they were using against the officers. I don't know, but something isn't right. Just my opinion.

It's obvious that the family is just trying to get money. At least the idiot is not around to do more damage.

From the GoBlueridge article..

Sheriff Williams stated that his officers arrived at the scene after being dispatched to a man shooting toward neighbor's houses all afternoon hours after darkness had fallen. They observed a man inside with a weapon, who had been shooting all afternoon in a closely populated community, who had shot up his own home, who had weapons and ammo stockpiled at the door. They observed Houck inside with a weapon. At that point they asked Houck to step outside to speak to them. Houck came out carrying a high powered rifle. Officers asked Houck to put down the weapon. Instead he pointed the high powered rifle at them. At that point, they had no choice but to defend themselves.

I'm astonished the paper boy even ran the story. I'm surprised no one else has run the story like charlotte or winston.

I need to dig the old thread out and do a little reading. I do remember he was reported to be on the porch shooting up the hood.

Because they had to find an ambulance chaser that would work for free

This family has the right to sue those officers, I said in the beginning this was wrong and something just doesn't smell right...I just can't understand why they have not done this sooner...so sad!

It's good to see folks standing up for what is right, there have been so many unerhanded things taken place in this county, its sickening, there will be several of them continuing to be made public. It's sad people cant just be honest anymore.
