Watauga Statistics

Watauga has a much higher rate of diplomas than Ashe. The median income is depressed due to the number of residents under 25 that make lower incomes or no incomes (primarily college students).
The US Median Income is $53,657
Cost of Living though is much higher in Watauga than it is in Ashe
Ashe county's cost of living index is 95.3 % of the US Average (note health care and grocery costs here are higher than the US average but other areas are lower). In contrast Watauga's cost of living index is 103.9% of the US average. (They are higher in nearly every area). Watauga also has a higher crime rate than Asha, and both are around the same on consumer spending.
Advanced Degrees are not needed to do 95% of all jobs, the insistence on them is just to feed the governments money pit through student loans and high tuition, after all they have to provide some incentive for you to become an indentured servant to them.

Yes. I think it was 1100 normally, there was an extra fee for something they are doing maybe extra evening hours. Either way that is expensive.

$1300 a month for someone to look after a brat? Makes me like my dog even more. I can throw him out some food, leave for several days, he can go in and out through his door if he wants, and is always glad to see me when I get back

I am not real sure what the national average is. Department of labor uses CPI but its only for urban areas. I know at work we used a few private agencies to gather similar data for the region but we looked at more individual cost such as healthcare and childcare instead of overall cost of living.
Having said that, childcare is probably the biggest single service or commodity that was cheaper in the area than other areas. That alone would drive the cost of living way down. I have a friend that pays $1300 per month for child care. The same care here is $400-500.

Do you remember what the national average is? One problem for NC, is a lot of "rural" areas are driven up because they are also resort areas. For example, Boone and Cashiers have costs of living as high as Charlotte. Some things like gas are even higher in those areas. From what I remember, Ashe still was significantly lower and not as affected, yet.

I have seen somewhere that said rural NC had a 5% lower cost of living than the national average. Not sure exactly what Ashe is, but I am guessing it is close to that.

The job market is more complicated than that. What is more of an issue than the availability of jobs(If you look there are jobs) are the low wages. Why would anyone that gets a degree come back when the same job pays more in other areas or come back to a low wage job out of their area of study. The 2014 Median income for all US households was 53k and in 2015 in Ashe it was 36k. Now rural areas will always lag behind the national numbers, but that is a huge gap.
Advanced education is essential in today job market. Ashe lags behind in people obtaining those degrees. When a potential company looks at the statistics in Ashe, they are seeing a very untrained labor force. In return we get low paying jobs that add to this cycle of poverty that has become embedded in our community.

Given the county's level of poverty, I would say there are probably a good number of folks that would qualify for help that don't get it. They may not realize they could get help, or they might just be strongly independent mountain folks who don't want a government hand out.
Our population is also aging with nearly a quarter of the county over the age of 65.
Our youth population has been decreasing, with less than a fifth of the county under the age of 18. (those under 5 don't even make up 5% of the population).
Our overall population is in decline, primarily due to the lack of jobs.
