WBTV is the only one with the balls to do the story and have the lawyers and money to back up the records request. The law was designed to be followed however Ashe county chose to make WBTV go to court to get the records. What it cost the county and bufurt was done at their own doing not WBTV.

People I know in the Sheriffs Office have said the same thing Fairplay said. The only reason to appoint a new Sheriff would be to give him the advantage of incumbency. Most are hoping they just leave Clayton as Acting Sheriff like he is now. Better to stick with the devil you know..And everyone of them I have talked to is waiting for Buchanan to be removed and hoping he is convicted. Everyone wants to be the one to take him to prison.

Clayton is renting a place to live during the week. He has enough to claim residence, especially after a whole year. But the BOC could also keep delaying making an appointment and just leave him as interim sheriff until the election.

As crooked as he is, unless the SBI locks him up too, this may be the best choice. Naming any replacement would just shake up the ACSO even more, even if they came in and did everything to not rock the boat. And naming anyone that’s planning to run would be giving them an unfair advantage.

Do we know Clayton will not file to run for sheriff if he were to get the appointment?

At this point, they may as well keep Clayton as Acting Sheriff. If they were to appoint someone as Sheriff, it would just be to give someone the benefit of incumbency. All I see happening is another 3 - 2 vote.

Does Clayton live here? I think not. He owns no property here with a residence on it. He does not have a NC drivers license with an Ashe County address. He is not registered to vote in Ashe County. He does not live here, he just stays here.
