Jr, I just did a little checking, and it looks like the same company has combined the Watauga and Avery mountain times into one paper and left it free, and kept the Watauga Democrat and Avery Journal as pay papers. So you may be right. But instead of combining the Times and the Post, they may be more likely to fold the Times back into one single paper with the Watauga/Avery paper and keep the Post as is. Then often duplicate articles between them like they’ve done in the others.

I couldn’t tell you the last time I picked up a paper. Most of the times when I walk by the papers in a store I scan the headlines, but hadn’t noticed it was a pay paper now

When did the mountain times go to a pay paper?

We used to have two papers called the Skyland Post and the Jefferson Times, they then merged because the county couldn't support both and became the Jefferson Post. Then the Mountain Times started as a free paper and then moved to a pay paper and then a paywall. I doubt they'd want to have 2 papers competing with one another in this county. They could merge the names again and make the Mountain Post or Jefferson Times again, or they could stick with one or the other name (probably keeping the older name).

papers. My guess is AMT absorbs the Post and it's possibly non paywall and/or print, one newspaper in Ashe. I believe the AMT editorial staff was made up of interns anyway, at least after Howell left.

It's been said around here for years that this county is too small for two news

I hope they don't put up the paywall. I hate that about the Ashe Mountain Times. I've pretty much stopped reading it because of it.

Watauga still has the Democrat and the Watauga Mountain Times. The same company also owns the Avery mountain times and Avery journal. Given the way they’ve handled the other towns/counties, I expect they will keep both papers. But you may start seeing articles duplicated in both publications.
I’ve expected this to happen for a while

I wonder if you want to view it online you will have to pay like you do for the Ashe Mountain Times?

The Jefferson Post was sold, effective Nov. 1, 2017 to AMG, the Adams Media Group. This is the same company that owns the Ashe Mountain Times, along with papers in Boone, Blowing Rock and others. I wonder how long it will be until we have just one newspaper?
